Hall of Fire Chats for November 10th & 11th
-
Strider @ 18:14 PST

Led blindfolded, the Fellowship arrive at the Golden Wood, Lothlórien, where they are kindly greeted by Lord Celeborn and Galadriel. Bearing ill tidings of the demise of Gandalf the Grey, the eight walkers are welcomed by the Elves and spend several days in their lands. However, they must never forget the quest they still have in front of them, a message made very clear by the harrowing vision Frodo sees in the pale waters of a flowing basin. This weekend, the Hall of Fire discusses:

Book II Chapter VII - The Mirror of Galadriel

As the Fellowship remain in the untainted lands of Lothlórien, the news of Gandalf's fall into the abyss causes great sorrow, and songs of lament about Mithrandir, the Grey Pilgrim, the Istari from the West. During this time, the Fellowship learn of the stature of the Lord and Lady of Lothlórien, and how deeply woven the One Ring has become in their lives since it's forging all those years ago.

And one night under the evening star, Galadriel leads Sam and Frodo to the Mirror of Galadriel, a basin that shows things that were, and things that are, the things that yet may be. In it each sees in it a deep-rooted fear in their soul and each realises what rests on their shoulders, not just the destruction of the One Ring but the preservation of Middle-Earth from the ultimate evil.

A fantastic chapter without a doubt, and one that poses some serious questions to the remaining members of the Fellowship. But it also stirs some emotions in the reader itself, as we watch Frodo and Sam look into a reflection of their hopes, fears and wildest dreams. This weekend, we have three chats across the world to accomodate as many people as possible, and we hope you join us for what should be a fantastic discussion.

Hall of Fire Chats for November 3rd and 4th
-
Strider @ 19:49 PST

With Aragorn at the helm, the Fellowship are forced to turn away from Moria and its bottomless depths which they believe to be the resting place of Gandalf the Grey. The eight walkers stumble upon Lothlórien, the Golden Wood and for a brief moment offer a respite from their troubles. But as Frodo learns, even the mirror of Galadriel cannot hide from him the perils that lie ahead. This weekend, the Hall of Fire discusses all this and more as we examine

Book II Chapter VI - Lothlórien

After a difficult passage into the lands of Lothlórien itself with the treath of an Orc attack and the blindfolding of each member as a show of solidarity, finally the Fellowship see the splendour of Lothlórien and all within it with their own eyes. Bidden to come to Cerin Amroth, the Elven guides lead the eight walkers towards the home of Allies welcome but unlooked for.

This chapter may lead up to the following 'Mirror of Galadriel', but it is an emotional one as the group of eight are forced to deal with the sudden loss of their leader, and show solidarity as each one is blindfolded and led through the lands of Lothlórien, instead of just Gimli himself. A chapter for lovers of Elven culture, this should create some great discussions this weekend, and you're most welcome to come visit us at one of our three discussions.

Jincey @ 00:35 PST

Barlimans Regular Scorpio just celebrated his 18th birthday with this cake, which his parents secretly had made for him, by stealthily sneaking one of his LOTR books out to the baker's. Luckily for us who didn't make it to the party, Scorpio had the presence of mind to take a pic *before* taking a bite!

Hall of Fire Chats for October 27th and 28th
-
Xoanon @ 19:12 PST

Until December 19th we won't know what choices were good and which were bad, however this weekend the Cast of Lord of the Rings is the discussion of choice...and what a great discussion it is.

The great thing about casting actors for characters is, everyone has a different opinion on it and a prime example of this was in the early stages of making Lord of the Rings into a movie, when every person seemed to have their own opinion on a role. Rumours were rife, as names like Brosnan, Connery, Hawke and Thurman were mentioned in the roles of Elrond, Gandalf, Faramir and Galadriel respectively. A test shot of an elf that emerged on AICN even sparked rumours of Keanu Reeves playing some part in the Trilogy....thankfully that rumour bore no fruits.

Even with the cast decided, within two weeks the character of Aragorn had to be recast as Stuart Townsend was found to be the wrong person for the role. Since those early days, the discussion on who should have played what role still go on, with some people still not happy with the actors. So this weekend, get ready to battle for your convictions as you explain just why you have chosen 'X' as Gandalf and 'Y' as Frodo, as we talk about one of the oldest arguments surrounding Lord of the Rings.

Hall of Fire Chats for October 20th and 21st
-
Strider @ 18:05 PST

Standing beside the tomb of Balin in the Chamber of Records, the Fellowship find themself in the heart of the Mines of Moria, a dread and horror in their hearts as they read the demise of Balin's company. Suddenly, doom boom boom goes a drum in the darkness, and the Fellowship make a hasty retreat through the flame filled lower levels of Moria. Just as it looks like they have escaped, suddenly a horrible spectre of fire and darkness emerges as the source of the flames themselves, and a stand off is made between Gandalf and the fearsome Balrog, one which neither wins. This weekend, the Hall of Fire Chapter by Chapter discussions reach arguably the most important chapter in the Fellowship of the Ring;

Book II Chapter V: The Bridge of Khazad-dűm

For a lot of people, this is their favourite chapter of the Fellowship of the Ring, and for obvious reasons. From start to finish, the chapter manages to always hint at something evil lurking in the shadows, from the book on Balin's last few moments drawing breath, to the drumming in the dark, to the tapping of feet as the Fellowship hastily retreat, to the climax of the chapter where the ultimate evil in Moria is revealed: The Balrog.

A fearsome beast, much has been made of the ambiguous way its features have been described by Tolkien: a speared pointed tail or an actual whip, a creature of shadow or just one that portrays endless darkness, and even the dreaded discussion.....wings or no wings? Whatever about it's appearance, even Gandalf seems to be afraid of the creature, and makes the ultimate sacrifice so that the Fellowship may complete their quest. With Gandalf lost, the Fellowship are thrown into despair, their leader gone and their path no longer clear.

This weekend should be a fantastic debate, and we want Tolkien fans of every kind to join our discussions this weekend, as we talk about each and every aspect to this fantastic chapter...even wings!
