I emailed to tell you that LOTR popped up in another article in todays Sydney Morning Herald titled 'Popcorn Projections' basically films to look
out for in 2001.
"The most ambitious undertaking in the film world recently has been Peter Jackson's filming of TLOTR trilogy in New Zealand. If the results are as epic as the production, the first Baggins of the rank, The Fellowship of the Ring, will be worth the wait until next christmas. Elijah Wood plays Frodo Baggins, Sean Astin is Samwise Gamgee, Ian Holm is Bilbo Baggins, Ian McKellen is Gandalf and Cate Blanchett is Galadriel. Other locals in the cast of the three films that reportedly cost $US260 million include Hugo Weaving, Miranda Otto and Bruce Spence."
Pretty standard stuff, but at least it is hype for a film that is way off being released.
Just another note, there is talk around that the trailer in Australia is going to be attached to What Women Want but that has already been released here, yesterday in fact. I'm guessing it will be on Cast Away.

Ten Ways to Ruin Lord of the Rings
Please, save your angry mail. We're as insanely manic about the Lord of the Rings movie as anyone. We're not saying it will be bad; we're just saying that sometimes even well intentioned directors like Peter Jackson can turn something beautiful into something miserable. [More]

Here's a tidbit for all the Swedish readers. This is a link to an artikle about what movies we expect to see in the theaters this year. There's a picture from the Internet Preview and they say that "Peter Jackson turns Tolkien into action".

US Trailer - advance warning in the papers!
1/07/01, 11:55 pm EST - Tehanu
"I'm sure I'm not the first with this news, (No, you are!) but here in San Jose, California, the newspaper photo ad for "Thirteen Days" includes a small corner ad for LOTR ... "Be the first to see the LOTR trailer", with the web-site banner art included. Don't know if that's the case nation-wide. I've never seen that in a movie ad before."

Thanks to Demosthenes, who did the footwork and rang up Roadshow, the distributors, to find out. You can all try this at home.
Oh it all gets confusing. There's this, from Matt, who also did some asking:
"Just got off the phone with a very helpful guy at Village Roadshow in Victoria, Australia--the trailer will be in Melbourne theatres on Thursday 18th January. They are unsure of the exact film (but this should be confirmed by Tues 16th Jan), but likely contenders would be "Dungeons & Dragons", "Castaway", "The 6th Day", "Remember The Titans" and "Eye See You" as all are released on the 18th. He said that there will be advertising in the newspaper cinena guides saying which movie the trailer will be attached to, as they recently did with the "Tomb Raider" trailer."
Thanks for that! Confusing as it is - at least there'll be advance warning.

Having been away from TORN for the same time, I don't know if this has been said already, but I'd like to say a big thank you to the spies who've contributed to TheOneRing in the last 18 months or so. You've made long journeys on foot, boat, plane and train and you've waited up long cold nights under rain and stars. You've lugged heavy binoculars and telescopes around, you've pestered your friends and worried your families...well, you might have done that anyway, as dedicated Tolkien fans, but all of us in this internet community owe you thanks for sharing your experiences with us. And so we do thank you.

Yes, and the slogan's been revived here in NZ too - it's scratched into the one of the gateposts of the Wingate set in Wellington. Along with another cheeky bit of graffiti - "TheOneRing was here."

It seems like the LOTR trailer should start playing in France as of January 31th before the movie Le Pacte des Loups. It's a movie that's produced and distributed by Metropolitan Filmexport, a company that has an exclusive deal with New Line and who will be distributing LOTR in France. And besides, Le Pacte des Loups is a XVIIIth century dark adventure movie, so it seems to have the perfect audience match with LOTR.

Since you're putting up news of the international releases of the trailer. I've been informed that it will start showing in the major Norwegian cities on January 12th, with the movie "Sleepwalker."

Eva och Adam - Fyra fodelsedagar och ett fiasko!!!!
1/04/01, 7:07 pm EST - Xoanon
From: Praise the Bass
I just got a mail from SF (a major motion picture-distributor in Sweden). I asked when the new LOTR trailer would hit the screens here in Sweden. He said that the trailer would premiere January 19th with the movie "Eva och Adam - Fyra fodelsedagar och ett fiasko" (a swedish movie for the "younger audience").
This movie will probably just show in Sweden, but the date might give some hint to the premiere here in Europe.

LOTR Comercial during the Superbowl?
1/03/01, 5:28 pm EST - Xoanon
From: TORN Staffer Turgon
Below is some publicity stuff I got from Random House/Ballantine Books, with the news that a commercial for LotR will run during the Super Bowl.
Tolkien, Tolkien, Tolkien-The Movie is Coming.
The Tolkien Boxed Sets, as well as individual books and tapes, continue to just blow away. But it won't end with the Holidays, as 2001 begins the countdown to the movie!! Here's what we know so far: the trailer will start showing 1/12/01 (attached to the new Kevin Costner movie about the Cuban Missile Crisis) According to insider gossip, this is the hottest and most anticipated trailer since Star Wars. Posters for the movie will also begin to go up into theatres at that time.
And to get the buzz really going. . .a commercial will run during the Super Bowl on 1/28/01. Since coverage of the Super Bowl commercials is sometimes wider and longer than coverage of the actual football game, people will definitely be talking about Lord of the Rings. Please keep the books and tapes up front and to stay well-stocked.
The Ballantine Mass Market Boxed Set (0345-34042-6, $27.96) Contains:
The Hobbit 0345339681 The Fellowship of The Ring 0345339703
The Two Towers 0345339711 The Return Of The King 0345339738
Audio Boxed Sets: Lord of the Rings CD (055345653-9, $69.95) Cassette (055547228-3, $59.95)

Today, January 3rd was the late JRR Tolkien's Birthday. Years ago the gods blessed us with his gift of imagination and writing, and millions of people have been affected by him. Tolkien and his work lives as strong today as it did more than 40 years ago. And today we should think about the man and his work. It is because of you JRRT, that this site and all the people involved with it exist.
