Newton Howard Hops on 'The Waterhorse'

1/14/07, 4:31 pm EST - Xoanon

Director Jay Russel has posted a new blog on his MySpace website. He has some very exciting news!

"Just a brief note to tell you how excited I am that I just signed James Newton Howard on to compose the score for "The Waterhorse." I loved his scores for "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs." I thought both pieces had a wonderful combination of tension and mysticism. Not the easiest musical feat to accomplish."

Primeval With Orlando...Bloom?

1/14/07, 3:50 pm EST - Xoanon

Dean Goodman's latest article covering the Box Office race this weekend features a laughable misnomer when he states that the movie 'Primeval' stars Dominic Purcell and Orlando Bloom. The film of course stars Dominic Purcell and Orlando Jones. I can see how easy it is to mistake a black American actor with a white English one...silly me! Read the article here.

O2 ties up with Gandalf

1/13/07, 11:16 am EST - Xoanon

The stage show of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings opens in London on the 9th of May, and O2 has signed up for exclusive content including ringtones and O2-customer-preview nights. By all accounts the production is visually spectacular, though reviews from Canada were lacklustre, which bodes badly for a show which runs to almost 4 hours. O2 have sponsored a wide range of media events in the past, though this is their first excursion into theatre. [More]

New insect named after Tolkien character

1/13/07, 11:10 am EST - Xoanon

Spanish scientists have discovered a new invertebrate insect in certain caves of Castellon province, which they have baptized Gollumjapyx Smeagol in honour of JRR Tolkien who created the character in his 'The Lord of The Rings' trilogy.

The new animal is of exterior origin, but has adapted to permanent living inside caves. The new invertebrate has all the properties of a subterranean insect: its skin has no pigment, and it has extraordinarily large antennae, six feet and measures two centimeters in length. [More]

Forum Blitz with Prosthetics Wizard

1/10/07, 3:16 pm EST - Xoanon

From the geeks at WETA: Last year we tried something different on our Weta Forums, and invited Workshop Designer Daniel Falconer to ‘blitz’ the forums. And it was so popular that we have invited Senior Prosthetics Supervisor and Visual Creature Effects Art Director, Gino Acevedo to do it this month. Gino oversaw all the special makeup requirements that Weta Workshop provided for The Lord of the Rings trilogy. This included hundreds and hundreds of noses, ears and feet as well as the countless full facial and full body make-up appliances for all of Middle-earth’s non human inhabitants. [More]

Shaye: New Line Blacklists Jackson

1/10/07, 10:05 am EST - Xoanon

In the latest comment in the controversy surrounding a proposed movie based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, New Line head Robert Shaye told SCI FI Wire in no uncertain terms that the studio won't work with Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson on that film or any other film. Ever. At least not as long as Shaye is in charge.

Shaye's comments marked the first time a New Line executive has commented publicly on the fracas since Jackson announced that he has pulled out of the project and also appears to harden New Line's position against Jackson.

"I do not want to make a movie with somebody who is suing me," Shaye—New Line's chief executive officer—said in an interview on Jan. 5 while promoting The Last Mimzy, a New Line family fantasy that marks his first time in a director's chair since 1990's Book of Love. "It will never happen during my watch." [More]

Cameron has told The New York Times the film will test new technologies on a scale unseen before in Hollywood.
