Return of the One Party Webcast!

2/01/04, 5:18 pm EST - Arathorn

TORn is currently making plans to provide a live video and audio broadcast of this year's Oscar Party here on the website, in association with our friends at Nexcess.net. The hope is to let those who aren't attending the event in person participate in the next best way - potentially also meeting up in Barliman's to discuss what's going on and touch base with any chatters at the party itself.

However, for the webcast to be a success, we'd really appreciate it if everyone could fill in This Short Survey so we have an idea of how to put on the best show possible. [More]

The bold attempt to film J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fable of Middle-earth has been a resounding success. Already, the first two films in director Peter Jackson's rousing Lord of the Rings trilogy from New Line Cinema have become classics—very successful classics: The Fellowship of the Ring, with its Hobbits, wizards, elves, and Orcs, generated $862.2 million in box-office revenue; the second film, The Two Towers, topped that with ticket sales of $920.5 million, putting it into fourth place among all films, of all time. Hall Of Fire Chats This Weekend

1/30/04, 11:56 pm EST - Frode

The drama between Frodo, Sam and Gollum lies at the heart of Peter Jacksons 'The Return of the King'. The dynamics between the three travellers change as they slowly make their way from the Emyn Muil to Mt. Doom. Not only is there a growing strain between Frodo and Sam, but as they get closer to Mordor the Ring wears down what remains of good in the tormented mind of Smeagol.[More]

Crowning Achievement

1/30/04, 4:27 pm EST - Xoanon

Although composer Howard Shore has worked closely with other risk-taking directors, he seems in Peter Jackson to have found his ultimate muse. Howard Shore is unquestionably one of the great modern film composers. With over sixty scores to his credit, among them collaborations with Tim Burton (Ed Wood), Martin Scorsese (the upcoming The Aviator), David Cronenberg (Crash, Dead Ringers, et al) and David Fincher (Se7en), few of Shore's industry peers can match his versatile and prolific career stemming from his days as a musical director on Saturday Night Live. Emotional power of Ring role left me in tears

Rapid research was needed because I had not read the book. [More]

Angel Writers Go Geek

1/29/04, 12:01 am EST - Xoanon

F.X. Moon as well as a few others, including myself, caught this while watching the latest episode of the Buffy Spin-off, Angel.

When Andrew sees Spike for the first time since (Spoilers for non-North American viewers hidden!)Spike has returned from the dead, Andrew hugs him (very uncomfortably, based on Spike's reaction), and mutters "It's like Gandalf the White returning from the pit of the Balrog. He lives, Frodo, he lives" - very funny.

And then, a little later, Andrew makes a reference to Spike's "Viggo Mortenson-like pecs".

ROTK By The Numbers

1/28/04, 9:03 pm EST - Xoanon

Brandon Gray from boxofficemojo.com writes: Amidst the hullabaloo of the Oscar noms and Golden Globes, 'ROTK' accomplished something greater than the promise of Oscar gold -- it topped 'Finding Nemo' to become the No. 1 movie from 2003 worldwide. 'ROTK's global take climbed to $876.5 million, leaping ahead of 'Nemo's $844.3 million. On the All Time chart, 'ROTK' jumped to No. 6, topping 'Fellowship of the Ring's $869.8 million and 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' $869.4 million. In about two weeks' time, 'ROTK' should top 'Two Towers' $924.8 million to be the No. 1 movie of the 'LOTR' franchise. 'ROTK' won't even open in Japan until Feb. 14. Japan will be the key to whether 'ROTK' can top $1 billion worldwide (and in turn the No. 2 movie of all time behind 'Titanic's $1.8 billion). [More]

Lennox: I Don't Know If I Can Make the Oscars

1/28/04, 12:18 pm EST - Xoanon

From IMDB: Former Eurythmics star Annie Lennox will only perform her Oscar- nominated song at this year's ceremony - if her family don't need her at home. The Scottish singer - whose track Into The West from The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King is up for the Best Song gong at next month's Academy Awards - has two daughters Lola and Tali with ex- husband Uri Fruchtman, and puts them before anything else, even the most exciting night of the showbiz calendar. Makeup
Music - Original Score
Music - Original Song
Art Direction
Costume Design
Sound
Visual Effects
Film Editing

Congrats to all and see you February 29th! Learn more at Oscars.com

UPDATE! Well, looks like the Academy messed something up. Barlimans Regular Dalgoth pointed out that the printable Oscar-ballot [Here] shows a nomination for The Return of the King for Sound Editing, instead of one for Finding Nemo. So could that be the 12th nomination? We'll keep you updated!

And so we will. Unfortunately most evidence seems to point towards an error on the printable ballot. The PDF-file of the ballot does have Finding Nemo listed as does the pressrelease from the Academy. It seems they have updated their normal ballot as well. No real harm done, although it is a bit sloppy. Sorry to get all of your hopes up, but on the bright side: we already got the Oscar for Sound Editing last year... - leo
