Media Watch: Central Otago Edition of "The Mirror"

10/07/00, 12:34 pm EST - Xoanon

From: Roger

I looked through all the newspaper web pages for a digital of this article but zip-o so guess this shot will have to do.

Glad to have been some help, oh, VERY sunny, clear, mild temps and no wind at Poolburn today.

Cheers
Roger

While I tend to think the paper managed to snap a pic of the back of the set, it still lets us have a good look at what it may be. Any ideas?

LOTR scores highly in the polls.

10/06/00, 6:51 pm EST - Tehanu

Forget the E-word, the polls we've been following are the ones on a number of other film websites, which are posing questions such as 'Which film are you most anticipating next year?' LOTR scores pretty highly in all these polls, and we're pleased to report that over at TheForce.net the film that people are most interested in (other than the next Star Wars, of course - it's a Star Wars site) - is The Lord of the Rings, with a massive 41% of the vote.

The interview with Sir Ian is archived for your listening pleasure!

10/05/00, 11:55 pm EST - Tehanu

RNZ kindly put Kim Hill's interview in their star spot for the next week or so, and you can access it here if you have realplayer and are java-compatible.

I liked it a lot, I must say! Even though he barely mentioned Gandalf, he reinforced my impression that the role has gone to a person who is a most intelligent, civilised, and thoughtful human being as well as an inspiring actor.

Sean Astin talks about being Sam.

10/05/00, 11:07 pm EST - Tehanu

'Pavement' magazine has scored quite simply one of the best interviews I've seen with any cast member. (more)

Craig Parker is 'innately lazy'

10/05/00, 9:29 pm EST - Xoanon

All in good fun of course, the latest issue of 'Metro' features an article on Craig Parker (Haldir).

"Craig Parker (Haldir) gets the spotlight on him in this month's issue of Metro, one of Auckland's leading glossy mags for people with spare brain cells. Great pictures of the ex-Shortland St. actor who's headed for world fame with the role of Haldir in 'The Lord of the Rings.' We've heard rumours that the role is expanded a bit from what Tolkien wrote.

Metro's article only mentions LOTR in passing, but gives us an idea of the range of Parker's talent. As well as working in LOTR, he's doing a part in a splatter movie called 'No One Can Hear You' and he's appearing in a stage play about Oscar Wilde's later years called 'The Judas Kiss.' His comment on the acting life:

"Drinking coffee is kinda my major hobby....the great benefit of being an actor is you have all this spare time. My ideal is just hanging out with people - I think I'm innately lazy"

New image on Lord of the Rings official site.

10/05/00, 8:46 pm EST - Tehanu

Amargasaur wrote to tell us that if you go to the offical site and click on "Epic Tale" you get a page with a new image of the eagles at Amon Hen. Between the eagles I think I can see an incised shape like an Egyptian eye glyph, which would tie in with the idea of Amon Hen as the Hill of Seeing. It's not the same as the Lidless Eye of Sauron, though as I've noted before, this whole design is like a 'good' version of the evil Watchers in the pass of Cirith Ungol.

A picture of the whole Amon Hen structure is over at Scoop

McKellen interview starts in a little over an hour as I post this up.

10/05/00, 4:47 pm EST - Tehanu

That's 11am here in NZ, 6pm EST and 12am GMT if you're planning to listen in on Radio New Zealand Remember you'll need Realplayer to hear it.

Sir Ian on RNZ: Interview tomorrow at 11am

10/04/00, 10:45 pm EST - Tehanu

The interview with Sir Ian is broadcast here on Friday at 11am on the Kim Hill show. For those of you outside of NZ, I think I've got my head round the daylight saving adjustment. The McKellen interview is on Radio New Zealand's website, broadcasting live at just after 6pm EST on your Thursday. Check you're set up to receive it first.

The webmaster at RNZ says: "Occasionally <.5% users experience problems due to javascript client engine problems integration with the Real Player. This is true for Apple and Linux. I have consulted with US experts and there is nothing I can really do to fix this.

It is also important that all visitors to the site already have Real PLayer installed. While there are links available to download and install the player - this site uses Real Player and autostarts immediately site is loaded so if the plugins are not installed the user will get an error message.

Real Networks will not allow plugins to autoinstall as they want to get people to load the entire application."

Don't mean to sound like a sales blurb, but you can download that here

Controversy at TORN

10/02/00, 11:29 pm EST - Quickbeam

Here in America, it never fails that if you mention politics you are likely to get into a fight.

My new Out on a Limb feature, "The 2000 Vote: Gandalf or Saruman," had only one modest goal: to blast some fresh air into the way we look at the election process. It has since caused a firestorm of angry readers demanding my head on a plate. Love it or hate it, come see what all the fuss is about over in Green Books.

This piece does not indicate the political leanings of TheOneRing.net, which has its roots in Canada and New Zealand and couldn't care less about American politicking.

Hastily,

Quickbeam

Media Watch 1: SFX Magazine

10/02/00, 5:27 pm EST - Xoanon

Coolio brit mag SFX has a 'LOTR Rumor Roundup' article in the November issue. Calling LOTR '..the most reported on, spied on and talked about film project ever...', Thanks guys, we try our best :))

Media Watch 2: Cinescape Magazine

10/02/00, 5:23 pm EST - Xoanon

The latest issue of one of my favorite Genre Film Mags 'Cinescape' has a small blurb about LOTR. Saying 'As long as (Peter) Jackson captures the epic sense of adventure that made the book trilogy so breathtaking, we'll be there'.

Media Watch 3: FilmFax Magazine

10/02/00, 5:19 pm EST - Xoanon

The Fanboy film and TV mag 'Filmfax' has a cover story dedicated to Christopher Lee (Saruman) this month. The Mag talks to Lee regarding his past and future roles, curiously enough, no mention of LOTR. Yet it sill is a great insight to our Saruman.

Visit the FilmFax Magazine Website here.

Back to School with Green Books

10/02/00, 1:24 am EST - Quickbeam

Greetings – Quickbeam here.

It’s not officially autumn until you’ve stuck your nose in a book. So open up Green Books and enjoy our new features. You’ll find all this more:

  1. Why is 13 an unlucky number in Middle-earth?
  2. How did Gandalf conceal Narya?
  3. What’s the origin of the word "Gollum"?
  4. Why did Aragorn dismiss the Army of the Dead?

All these and more can be found here.

Next month we provide a special Hallowe’en edition of Green Books that’s going to be full of surprises (and ghosts). Join us as we explore the WORDS and WORLD of Tolkien.

Much too hasty,

Quickbeam
