Blanchett Interview in Carte Blanche Shop Magazine

10/14/01, 5:32 pm EST - Strider

As I was walking through my local shopping centre today, I noticed in the corner of my eye a magazine cover with the image of Cate Blanchett and the words 'Lord of the Rings'. I picked it up and to my suprise it was the mall's own-written magazine, Carte Blanche. In the interview itself, Cate speaks highly of PJ, New Zealand and the Trilogy itself. [More]

Blanchett: 'I Did LOTR For The Ears'

10/14/01, 1:24 pm EST - Xoanon

The October isssue of Famous (Canadian movie Mag) features an article about Cate Blanchett (Galadriel) that includeds a small pick of her blessing Frodo as well as a quote about her role in the movie,

"I had never done anything with blue screen before, or prosthetics, or anything like that. Lord of the Rings was like stepping into a videogame for me. It was another world completely. But, to be honest, I basically did it so that I could have the ears," she jokes. "I thought they would really work with my bare head."

Thanks to Cosima for the article!

Essential News for Polish Fans

10/14/01, 12:59 pm EST - Strider

Polish Ringer Darth Ejka sent me a HEAP of great information from Poland:

I've found out some facts about our Polish promotion of "LotR". First of all Enya's song will be heard in the radio and in our Polish MTV with the beggining of November. Polish MTV will also organize a great contest about "LotR" and there's going to be a big Tolkien-Olympics in all all Polish schools! "LotR" books are coming out 7th November and the soundtrack is avaible from 19th November. Posters are already in theatres and the trailer will be shown from 24th October in 35 theatres and after a week or to in another 100 before the film "Blow" or something like that. The promotion will also involve Pizza Hut, "Polityka" magazine and "Viva!", which is planning a special number with intervievs with the creators, actors and a special look on costumes and so on (all in December). The mobile phones will also include "LotR" goodies.

Where To Go? Indigo!

10/14/01, 12:58 pm EST - Xoanon

From: Artemis

I just got back from Indigo (book stores) and I was pleasantly surprise to see a huge display of Tolkien books. Not just LOTR and the Hobbit but evey single book or story Tolkien ever wrote! They had maps and guides to Middle Earth too. Then I looked over and saw a HUGE poster of Elijah Wood as Frodo with the Ring and it said 'Read the Adventure, See the Movie'. It also pictured each LOTR book and the two movie guides. It said they were going to be out November 6th. So if anyone has an Indigo bookstore near them they should hop on over and check out all the deals.

Media Watch: The Writer Magazine

10/14/01, 12:08 pm EST - Tookish

... a really great article I found in the November 2001 issue of The Writer magazine called "10 Secrets to Writing Fantasy." They reference dozens of authors, mostly Tolkien and J.K. Rowling, and have two excellent interviews with Peter S. Beagle and Ursula K. LeGuin (Tehanu should be happy about that). Both of them mention Tolkien, which I found interesting. I found the magazine at the library, so people should be able to get access to it. I recommend it!

Thanks Nywoe!

Hall of Fire Chats for October 13th and 14th

10/12/01, 7:37 pm EST - Strider

Throughout the months of shooting the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, at times Peter Jackson has had to make decisions to tinker with the way the books have been written so that they can be adapted onto the cinema screen, and of course fit within a nine hour timeframe. One of these decisions involved changing a theme that is a strong thread woven through J.R.R's literature, and bears with it some moral questions. Originally Tolkien wrote in the Silmarillion that orcs were created by the evil and perverse corruption of Elves, but instead when we go to see the Fellowship of the Ring, we will see a story about orc pods, genetically engineered armies of evil. This weekend, the Hall of Fire discusses Orc Breeding - The Interpratations of J.R.R Tolkien and Peter Jackson. [More]

LOTR: FOTR: 'Wild Card'

10/12/01, 1:38 pm EST - Xoanon

From: Ice Hobbit

Just a quick note to alert you to an article in the Wall Street Journal Weekend Section on Holiday Movies.

The Article trumpets Harry Potter as "Hands down, the biggest movie of the season (cough*2dimensional*cough -Xo). It unfortunately describes LOTR:FOTR as a wild card citing the facts that the book published in 1954 is unknown to many of today's kids; that the first installment lacks the punch of the second and third; and questions whether the film can draw more than the typical fantasy-movie audience. Well I'm still looking forward to it.

FOTR Adverts on Canadian Television?

10/10/01, 12:02 pm EST - Strider

From Nairn:

A new short trailer is being shown on BBC Canada (Shaw Digital Channel 106 in Calgary). It's not much more than a minute, doesn't show us anything we haven't seen before. Shots include the ring spinning into Frodo's hand, the fellowship's attempt on Caradhras and Galadriel with Frodo. Her line "even the smallest person can change the future" seems to be the hook they're going for, at least for this campaign, as it was about the only line of dialogue in the trailer.

(I've not seen this in Montreal, but I'll keep my eyes out for you -Xo)

The October issue of UK's "Total Film" magazine includes 2 large double sided posters for LotR and Planet of the Apes. The LotR poster has the four hobbits with swords drawn at Weathertop, and Arwen at the Ford. FOTR gets top billing, 2 pages and lots of photos in their movie preview feature article.

The Oct/Nov issue of Barnes & Noble's Sci-Fi/Fantasy newsletter "Explorations" has 5 pages devoted to LotR, including a nice interview w/ PJ, pictures of the new books and a contest. The new movie tie-in books are prominently displayed at my local store, including a Gandalf Standee/Book rack.
