Kiana sends in word that Elijah Wood (Frodo) will be hosting Saturday Night Live on December 13th. NBC.com has no listings or mention of future guests. It seems there may be some truth to this rumor, his name has been added to snlonline.tv. The best way to find out, however, is to watch the show the next few weeks and see if his name is listed in the 'coming soon' bumpers between commercials.

How much would you pay for a leather-bound album the of NZ Post's trilogy of LOTR stamps, the only one in the world signed by Peter Jackson? This is what the organisers of the Organ Donor Awareness Foundation want to know. Because such a thing is being auctioned, but not publicly. However if there is sufficient interest from the worldwide online community in bidding for this object, we will attempt to acquire it and make it available to you, in that way raising more money for our charity. LOTR Still Topping BBC's The Big Read

Three weeks into voting and The Lord of the Rings has maintained it's place at the very top of the BBC's The Big Read list, the BBC's search for the UK & Ireland's favourite book. This Friday saw LotR's turn to have a celebrity triumph its merits, with Ray Mears going into an in-depth exploration of the book's themes. The final pecking order of the list will be announced on December 13th, so if you live in the British Isles and feel like voting for Tolkien's classic, click here to find out how to cast your vote.

With Lord of the Rings mania set to take off once again, the largest flying billboard in the world rolled out of the hangar at Auckland Airport. Made up of 360 individual pieces, the 800sq m jigsaw curves around the fuselage and engines of the Air New Zealand Boeing 747-400, and can withstand speeds of up to 1000kph and temperature extremes between -60C and 60C. From the official site comes word of a great publicity event in New York: "To celebrate the November 18th DVD and VHS release of the Special Extended Edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, NYC commuters are invited to ride the "Middle-earth Shuttle" (otherwise known as the Times Square-Grand Central Shuttle). The Shuttle train's cars-replete with Middle-earth creatures, vines, moss and stones-will carry commuters between both stops from 11:30AM- 1:30PM. Brave travelers will have the opportunity to explore the Middle-earth- themed subway station, accompany Gollum back and forth, stand tall with 12-foot- high living Ents, and much more!"

More Bad News For Finland

Via our Finnish friends at Kontu: The release date of The Return of the King soundtrack has changed from the date announced earlier (11/24/2003). At the moment, the soundtrack will be officially released December 1. In reality, this means the CD will be in stores around Helsinki on December 2 and elsewhere in Finland the day after. Towers EE Hits Mexico And UK!

Ringer Martin writes: The Two Towers EE Gift Set (the one with Gollum) is already on sale in Mexico at least in one store (Mixup Zona Rosa). It is very expensive though, at 1135 pesos (about $95 US). The normal EE won't be available until Wednesday.

Ringer Andy adds that he was able to buy the Two Towers EE on Friday the 14th - even though it's not released until Tuesday. A shop known as Forgotten World - a sci-fi/gaming/comic/collectors store - had it on display and available for sale.

It's on pages 50 - 55 and gives a great overview of the islands, the various movie locations, and all sorts of useful info on planning an LOTR themed trip. The writer seems to have spent quite a bit of time there, doing all the tours and things herself. She even found an Orc extra and interviewed him about his experience.

Tolkien and the Great War

John Garth's book, Tolkien and the Great War: The Threshold of Middle-earth, has now been published by HarperCollins. It recounts Tolkien's experiences in the First World War, describes the building of his mythology; and tells the full story of his inspirational group of friends, the TCBS. Drawing extensively on his unpublished personal papers from this period, it is the first substantially new biography of Tolkien since 1977. AN Wilson, in the London Evening Standard, says: "This is very much the best book about Tolkien that has yet been written...." Wilson's review can be read here and the book is for sale here.
