Soundtrack.net Reviews The TTT Score!

11/17/02, 11:07 pm EST - Xoanon

Quite recently, SoundtrackNet had a chance to speak with Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore about his work for The Two Towers, Peter Jackson's highly-anticipated follow-up to last years blockbuster Fellowship Of The Ring. Shore graciously related more than a few insights into the latest cinematic chapter of J.R.R. Tolkien's literary masterpiece The Lord Of The Rings. "This piece is act two of a three act piece," Shore explained. "The first act is a very linear story: start in Hobbiton, meet characters, learn about The Ring, set out on the journey with Sam. Slowly meet the rest of the fellowship, journey to the mines of Moria. Very linear." [More]

Shore FOTR Track Used By Polish Skating Duo

11/17/02, 3:13 pm EST - Strider

Dark Bastion writes: I was eating lunch Friday around 3:00, and a nearby TV was showing some ISU figure skating on ESPN. It was a male and female duet, if that's the proper term, and the pair was skating to bits of Howard Shore's "The Fellowship of the Ring" score! The Polish pair scored within a range of 4.9-5.4 in all categories. Having just received my Collector's Gift Set in the mail, complete with excellent new additions to the score, it was a nice little touch to make this Tolkien fan's day complete.

FOTR screening in NZ, Australia

11/17/02, 3:11 pm EST - Tehanu

I don't know what the prospects are for LOTR fans elsewhere, but in NZ and Australia it seems that some cinemas (Auckland, Wellington) are putting FOTR (not the extended version) back on the screens before TTT comes out. Check your local listings. Andrew in Australia reported that he saw FOTR again with the longer TTT preview tacked on the end, as a bonus.

It's available in the video game section at Toys R Us stores. Also, a magazine called "Fantasy Worlds" has a really great article of LOTR:TTT with many, many pictures, cast bios and character descriptions, and a long fold-out poster of Frodo. Great stuff here!

TTT Advertisements Begin Showing In Australia

11/17/02, 2:22 pm EST - Strider

Arod writes: I live in Brisbane (QLD, Australia) and I was just watching Channel Nine at 8:30pm AEST and what should I see but a Two Towers ad! I'm not sure if other people have seen them as well, but the one I saw basically just had bits and pieces from the trailer, finishing with "IN CINEMAS BOXING DAY". Very cool stuff!

Denethor Originally Dropped From LOTR?

11/17/02, 2:11 pm EST - Strider

Cuivienor writes: In the latest Cine Live magazine, we see a picture of Merry and Pippin meeting Gandalf, but in a forest. It might be Fangorn! Or maybe the forest of Huorns after Helm's Deep? Secondly, there's a small sentence in French where John Rhys Davies says: "I first was interviewed to be Boromir's father (Denethor), but this character was afterwards removed from the scenario, and there it goes that PJ wants me to be Gimli!". Does this suggest that Denethor was originally written out of the Trilogy pre-filming?

Oops! Look Ma, We Ran the Wrong Ad!

11/15/02, 8:25 pm EST - Calisuri

A lot of US Ringers were watching the warm-up for tonight's Boston Celtics vs. Mavericks basketball game on ESPN when they saw a rather BIG blooper. It seems an ad, meant for December, was let loose on the general TV viewing public with the claim that The Two Towers will be in theaters this Wednesday! While that would be great and all, and we are all dying to see the film, don't get too excited...It is definitely a mistake! I just feel sorry for the guy who ran the ad!

11/15/02, 6:57 pm EST - Strider

Centre-pieces to much of the action within The Lord of the Rings, the Palantiri are one of the most mysterious and, to the annoyance of its writer, 'magical' items in Middle-earth. Powerful spheres used to communicate, the Palantiri play an instrumental part in linking the events of The Lord of the Rings together and even setting them in motion. This weekend, the Hall of Fire crew invite you to join us as we discuss The Palantiri. [More]

The FIRST review of the LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS CD!!!!

11/15/02, 10:23 am EST - Xoanon

The biggest compliment one could pay Howard Shore's score to The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is to say that it accomplishes exactly what it needs to. Meager praise? Hardly. Shore's work on The Fellowship of the Ring was one of the most detailed and vibrant scores ever set to a fantasy film. It matched the story's literary complexity with a treasure trove of interconnected thematic material, meeting the epic filmmaking with a sincere and affectionate musical voice that never once overplayed a scene for the sake of showmanship. Reviews: 'Ring' DVD, 'Clones' video

11/13/02, 12:51 am EST - Xoanon

(Entertainment Weekly) -- Let's pretend, for a moment, that ''The Fellowship of the Ring'' is a person. This past August, when Mr. ''Fellowship'' premiered on DVD, he was in bathing-suit shape, coming in at a lean, theatrical 178 minutes. But now that he can hide under bulky sweaters and big winter coats, "Fellowship"'s put on an extra half an hour, and he's fat and happy. It's as if ''The Fellowship of the Ring'' doesn't have to suck in its gut anymore. [More]

Random_Hobbit brought this bit of news into Barliman's a short while ago: "My dad and I just went to Best Buy, and as we were walking in, there was an announcement that LOTR had just sold out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" "...some guy had JUST bought the last copy in front of us." Upon further query to the distraught hobbit, it seems that their local store had indeed sold out of all copies of the extended edition, both regular and collector's versions! So if you are in the Los Angeles area, you may have to do a bit of hunting for a copy. Good Luck!

Celeborn Unplugged

Every now and then, someone asks me to speak up for Celeborn. He is, perhaps, the most maligned and misunderstood of Tolkien's characters. Many people consider the silver-haired Lord of Lorien to be oafish or even foolish. Why? Basically because of one sentence uttered by Galadriel. [More]
