'So you forsake your father and his kin, ill-gotten son! Here shall you fail of all your hopes, and here may you yet die the same death as I.' Eol at Gondolin. [More]

Watch and Chat this Saturday: Those *other* wizards

2/10/06, 5:50 pm EST - maegwen

Wizards... short creatures... elves... a young lad with a big destiny... Nope, we're not talking about 'Lord of the Rings,' but instead: Harry Potter! Following TORn's wildly successful series of LOTR-Trilogy "watch and chats," we're starting up this weekend with the much-requested Harry Potter series. This Saturday at 5:30 pm EST we will start off with "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (that's the Philosopher's stone to everyone but us obviously confused Americans). Following that, "Chamber of Secrets" on 2/18, "Prisoner of Azkaban" on 2/25, and after a short break, "Goblet of Fire" on March 11th, following its release on DVD on 3/7. [More]

Join us tomorrow on our IRC server at 5:30 pm EST when we pop our copies of the film into the DVD player. After the usual confusion, at around 5.30pm EST we'll all press play on our individual players and proceed to cheer and jeer (or discuss and argue, if you like!) the finer points of the film.

For information on IRC chat and how to take part in the fun, visit our FAQ. Chat is family-friendly and easy in TORn's lively chat rooms. If you've never checked it out, this is a great chance to meet the regulars and have some fun. [Join the chat now!]

Hobbits, Witches, King Kong Lift New Zealand's Filmmakers

2/10/06, 11:40 am EST - Xoanon

Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- New Zealand's film industry is showing it's not all scenery and hobbits. The South Pacific nation's movie business, catapulted to fame by Peter Jackson's ``Lord of the Rings'' trilogy, which was filmed in the country, is tapping a surge in funding to make films such as Toa Fraser's ``No. 2,'' winner of the world cinema audience award at last month's Sundance Film Festival. Local studios have gained from Hollywood-funded productions such as ``King Kong,'' the latest blockbuster by New Zealander Jackson, and Andrew Adamson's production of ``The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,'' both filmed in the country. That boosted production financing to a record NZ$596 million ($406 million) in the year ended March 31, 2005, from about NZ$300 million in 1999. [More]

LOTR Musical Review

2/07/06, 10:54 am EST - Xoanon

Topaz writes: Well, I’m back – as Sam said. Or didn’t say, at least not on Sunday afternoon at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto where I saw the second ever performance of the new theatrical production of The Lord of the Rings. Long ago when I had first heard of plans to make LOTR into a musical, it scared me. Howard Shore had just done such an amazing job with the film scores, and now someone was going to make it all sound like Broadway? Please don’t…. Then as time went on and the production was to be in Toronto (half an hour from where I live), there began to be articles in the papers, interviews with the director – I read them and I began to feel less afraid that someone was going to ruin my favourite story. Toronto's Lord of the Rings musical a hit, say fans

TORONTO (CP) - Despite a two-day delay to fine-tune the production and some first-night mistakes, theatregoers say the new Lord of the Rings musical has been worth the wait. The Toronto show had its first preview performance on Saturday night and the diehard Lord of the Rings fans in attendance gave it rave reviews. Twenty-five-year-old Leah Hashimoto said she's read all the books, seen all the movies and still her high expectations were met. The mistakes Saturday night actually made the experience more memorable, she said. [More]

Epic quest to stage a musical

2/05/06, 5:44 pm EST - Xoanon

As producer Kevin Wallace watched the crowds leaving the Princess of Wales Theatre last night, he was in a positive frame of mind, despite the fact that various technical problems caused the first preview of The Lord of the Rings to run over four and a half hours. "We have a solid show," said a relieved Wallace, "the audience remained engaged throughout, even with all the problems and delays that we will fix in time. We just have to finesse things a little and we'll be home free." Yet only now, with previews underway and the all-important March 23 opening clearly in sight, can Wallace finally admit how close we came to not having The Lord of The Rings here at all. [More]

`Lord of the Rings' is orchestral magic

2/05/06, 5:42 pm EST - Xoanon

Since The Lord of the Rings Symphony had its first performance in New Zealand in 2003, there has been no stopping this orchestral hit. When the Cleveland Orchestra, its Chorus and Children's Chorus perform it this week, the number of performances will top 90 -- a number that would make any contemporary classical composer envious. Seats for the three concerts, Friday through next Sunday at Severance Hall, are sold out. At press time, standing room tickets were still available for $15. Some $18 tickets remained for the open dress rehearsal on Thursday. [More]

Theatrical musical version of Lord of the Rings hits the stage in Toronto

2/05/06, 5:40 pm EST - Xoanon

TORONTO (CP) - Adelene and Tyana Mohamed are bonded by more than just bloodlines: their intense shared passion for the Lord of the Rings took them to the ends of the Earth to pay a visit to Middle-earth. The Mississauga, Ont., sisters headed to Queenstown, New Zealand, last September to visit the shooting sites used in the popular film versions of the epic mythical trilogy. "Our family thinks we're a little weird, but the friends think it's cool - they're almost as bad as us," said Adelene of their Lord of the Rings fixation. Their journey brought them full circle to Toronto's Princess of Wales of Theatre for the opening night preview of the musical production of the Lord of the Rings. [More]

First LOTR Musical Review!

2/05/06, 5:39 pm EST - Xoanon

Vincent writes: Well I just saw the premiere THE LORD OF THE RING musical in Toronto. I must say it was quite the project to undertake given the amount of material and story depth. Overall I must say I was quite impressed with the way that it was portrayed. Most of the actors did an admirable job especially those of the Hobbits. [More]
