A curiously very great book

6/05/01, 3:44 pm EST - Xoanon

By Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com

J.R.R. Tolkien believed that myth is inherently true and material progress inherently evil. You could call that radical, reactionary or romantic, but it's a distinctively modern phenomenon. Modernity and the Enlightenment notion of progress have to exist before you can reject them, and once again we see that "The Lord of the Rings," for all the magic it employs to repopulate England with its ancient wraiths and spirits, belongs finally to the 20th century. • And a very nice surprise: new Tributes from authors Harry Turtledove and Lisa Goldstein, part of the forthcoming anthology, Meditations on Middle-earth, edited by Karen Haber (St. Martin's Press, Nov. 2001).
• Our Special Guest takes a spin on Tolkien’s most mysterious character: "Who is Tom Bombadil?"
• Enjoy the crazy comedic compendium of Tookish’s Ticklers.
• The ever-popular Q&A has 16 new articles, including:

  1. Does the Shire have its own ‘power?’
  2. Was Gandalf afraid of Beorn?
  3. Is there a background story on the Arkenstone?
  4. Are there two Minas Tiriths?
  5. Why even go to war against Sauron?
  6. How do magic Rings make one ‘fade?’

Moon Letters needs new submissions… so ink up your quills and get to writing!
• There are new updates in red to previous Q&A.

And I have a very special surprise later this month. Here’s a hint: working as a soldier of Gondor is harder than it seems! Stay tuned…

Much too hasty,

LOTR Trailer release dates updated.

6/03/01, 5:41 am EST - Tehanu

The Trailer Release Date Page has been updated with many new countries/cities thanks to Pippin Took. Meanwhile Harry Knowles wrote in with some good sense about the Japanese film release dates and why they're so late. "The Japanese Film Market basically doesn't understand or have a great deal of anticipation for LORD OF THE RINGS. The Japanese edition of the book is a poor translation that most Japanese seem to have a great deal of problems with.

As a result, Japan is the one major release area that is going to be staggered... this is so New Line can use the success of the film in the rest of the world to help the film there." Thanks to Harry.

Japanese Release date - what's going on?

6/02/01, 5:08 am EST - Tehanu

In Japan they're showing the OLD trailer in front of '15 Minutes,' and then, "...Extremely annoyingly, the out of date trailer ended with "Lord of the Rings" inkkatakana (Japanese alphabet), followed by a screen filled with the words "Spring 2002"."
