LOTR Composer Confirmed!

8/15/00, 11:37 am EST - Xoanon

'LORD OF THE RINGS' COMPOSER CONFIRMED

2000-08-14 After much rumours and speculations on various film music web sites, Howard Shore has now confirmed that he has been hired to compose the original music for Peter Jackson's much anticipated Lord of the Rings. In fact, it looks like the Canadian composer of stylish scores such as Silence of the Lambs, Crash, Dead Ringers, Philadelphia and The Fly, has been commissioned to score the whole trilogy. In a statement made to Music from the Movies, Howard Shore himself confirms: "Yes, I am doing The Lord of the Rings Trilogy".

Howard Shore has two new films coming up before entering Middle-Earth: he has scored the Jennifer Lopez thriller The Cell, opening this week, and The Yards. He recently wrote the score for High Fidelity, where Carter Burwell (who was hired initally) had to withdraw due to a schedule conflict. Another current Howard Shore project is the French film Ester Kahn.

The news about Howard Shore being the most likeable but surprising choice for Lord of the Rings was broken by www.soundtrack.net several weeks ago, but Music from the Movies is the first source to finally get the assignment confirmed.

There is NO LOTR movie preview in the Total Movie magazine's giveaway DVD

8/15/00, 12:15 am EST - Tehanu

Darth Caesar did the legwork, Darth Caesar gets the t-shirt. Here's the transcript of proceedings:
>In ODCM there's an ad for this Total Movie mag and since it's put out by Imagine I was hoping you could help me. On the cover it say's the Lord of the Rings trailer is on the dvd but this PR dude from New Line said this: "Just a heads up. I am one of the PR folk at New Line and I can say without a doubt that there will be no trailer for LOTR on any DVD released by Total Movie. This is nothing more than a bogus scam to get subscriptions." So is it or isn't it?
The reply to this, from Chris Bushnell, showbiz editor of the Daily Radar:

"Just got off the phone with Total Movie Editor-in-chief Gary Whitta. [he says]The magazine you saw in ODCM (Dreamcast Magazine?-T) was a mockup, a dummy issue they made up prior to the magazine's launch to sample what it might look like. So there will not be a LOTR trailer on the DVD, but Gary assures me that there is plenty of other kick-ass stuff on the DVD of the actual first issue...which hits magazine stands in a few weeks."

Just a quick indication of how popular LOTR is.....

8/14/00, 6:40 am EST - Tehanu

Just found an interesting site, adcritic.com which is a site that has compiled all the coolest commercials and movie trailers. If you click on the Top 100 link, you'll find a list of the 100 most popular video clips. Not surprisingly, this list is comprised of the funniest commercials that I can remember seeing, like the Budweiser Wassup? commercials (along with hilarious spoofs), and the trailers for every hot movie of the last six months. The Lord of the Rings trailer holds a very respectable position at number 32. Not bad for a brief look at a movie that won't even make it to the theaters for almost a year and a half! This is a great indicator that the LOTR is becoming a part of our cultural literacy.
Thanks to Sparrowhawk (what a cool name!) for that.

DVD trailer promise a scam?

8/14/00, 6:34 am EST - Tehanu

Disturbing news from PRMeister. Remember that story that you could subscribe to Total Movies magazine and you would receive a free DVD including the LOTR preview?

"Hey Tehanu -
Just a heads up. I am one of the PR folk at New Line and I can say without a doubt that there will be no trailer for LOTR on any DVD released by Total Movie. This is nothing more than a bogus scam to get subscriptions."

OK, what say we offer something (like, a OneRingNet T-shirt.....Calisuri? Corvar?) to the first person who can prove or disprove this rumour, which originally was reported as being published on an insert in Total Dreamcast. Yes we will certainly be following this story up, bigtime.

Decipher, Inc's Lord of the Rings cards

8/12/00, 10:05 pm EST - Corvar

While it will not truly surprise anyone who knows Decipher Inc's work, I have received confirmation from a Decipher employee that the recently announced Lord of Rings Card Games will indeed use imagery from the films. For an example of what Decipher's current product lines look like, check out the Young Jedi Card List.

While the Decipher employee mentioned that the Lord of the Rings Card Game would also cover the Silmarillion, I personally doubt this.

In other words, don't expect the cool artwork Iron Crown's Middle Earth Card game was known for.

Casting! Bruce Hopkins as...Gamling!!

8/11/00, 11:56 am EST - Xoanon

Bruce Hopkins

News comes from NZ regarding Kiwi actor Bruce Hopkins. Apparently Hopkins has been cast, however we have no idea as who. Any ideas?

Yep! (says Tehanu) Gamling the old, we've heard. He's the old codger that lives in the Deeping Coomb, and takes part in the defence of the Hornburg.

"Gamling the Old looked down from the Hornburg, hearing the great voice of the dwarf above all the tumult. "The Orcs are in the Deep!' he cried. 'Helm! Helm! Forth Helmingas!' he shouted as he leaped down the stair from the Rock with many men of Westfold at his back."

Hopkins has been making films since 1991 with a debut in 'Linda's Body', he also ran the 'Xena, Herc, Cleopatra' gauntlet as well, and yes, I'm waiting to see what role he had in Shortland Street...

More info as it makes its way available.

Today, August 11th marks the 10th month of principal photography in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Filming this past month has mostly been in the studio. Scenes we think they've filmed this past month have been the flooding of Isengard, and SOMEONE being impaled behind a blue screen.

I like pairing up images from different sources, and the recent lunar eclipse in NZ brought the same thought to a number of people who emailed me: Will they use this in the movies? Strangely enough, the red moon was seen more clearly in Wellington than anywhere else. Scoop reminded me they had the best image here and it certainly wouldn't be out of place next to this
