'Here, There Be Dragons'
9/29/06, 4:21 pm EST - Xoanon
djdeathskiss sends this along: Warner Bros. Pictures has pre-emptively picked up the rights to Here, There Be Dragons, an upcoming children's novel by James A. Owen, for David Heyman and David Goyer to produce, says The Hollywood Reporter.
The book brings together three strangers -- John, Jack and Charles -- in London during World War I, where they become entrusted with the Imaginarium Geographica, an atlas of all the lands that have ever existed in myth and legend, fable and fairy tale. They end up traveling to the Archipelago of Dreams, fighting the dark forces that threaten two worlds. It is later revealed that the three are future fantasy authors J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and Charles Williams, who met in real life at Oxford and enjoyed a competitive friendship.
The book is being launched next week by Simon & Schuster with a massive hardcover printing of 100,000 copies and is one of the company's big pushes for the year. The plan is to release six more books, one each October.

Joe Letteri Talk at 'The Tate' Report!
9/25/06, 5:02 pm EST - Xoanon
Irascan writes: Joe Letteri was joined by a surprise “second speaker” –
Andy Serkis. The lecture lasted about an hour including an introduction, an AutoDesk showreel, the talk with demos itself and Q&A from the floor at the end, with about 200 attendees. I’d provide a report but in all honesty there’s very little to report. There were some very cool demos of how New York was digitally built and lots of “this was the real set and what we filmed” pieces morphing into the scenes as shown in the film that were very impressive, and a lot of discussion about Andy’s work with gorillas and on set with
Naomi Watts. [

Weta Digital to Create Silver Surfer FX
9/25/06, 12:50 pm EST - Xoanon
From
The Hollywood Reporter (via superherohype.com): 20th Century Fox has picked Academy Award-winning visual effects house Weta Digital to oversee the upcoming film Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer. The studio tapped Weta to create a state-of-the-art version of the Marvel Comics character Silver Surfer. Noted character actor Doug Jones (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy) will provide performance and movement references for Weta, in a process similar to the way
Andy Serkis portrayed
Gollum in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The voice casting of Silver Surfer has yet to be determined. The Hollywood Reporter says Weta has developed an advanced computer-generated animation process that employs motion-capture techniques updated to add further dimensionality to the liquid-metal hero.
