LOTR Vending Machines - Xoanon @ 20:16 PST
Laurelin writes: Imagine my surprise when I went to the movies today, and found a 'Lord of the Rings' vending machine in the lobby! Even though I have reached an age of decorum, so to speak, I abandoned all respectability kneeling on the floor in front of the shrine, dumping out all my change on the carpet looking for quarters. After my third trip to the popcorn stand for more change, I managed to retrieve all of the set except for one. It was embarrassment, more than restraint that prevented me from asking the same snack guy if he could break a ten . . .

The set is produced by Tomy for New Line and consists of twelve 'simulated brass' (a.k.a. plastic) busts, each approximately an inch and a half tall. The bottom forms a black base, with 'Lord of the Rings' in tiny gold script. Three of the set are in full color: Aragorn, Gandalf and Frodo. Nine others are in brass-tone: Boromir, Aragorn, Sam, Pippin, Merry, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf and Frodo. They are actually pretty nice considering they are from a $1.00 vending machine. Packaging is the standard two-piece plastic ball, along with the enclosure I have attached.

Coming soon to a vending machine near you . . . Do yourself a favor though, and bring a pocketful of quarters, work fast, and make sure no one you know is watching! [More]

TTT Series 2 from Sideshow/Weta Collectibles - Calisuri @ 15:49 PST
Gandalf the WhiteSideshow/Weta just released images of their Series 2 products from The Two Towers. Featured as busts are Gandalf the White, Galadhrim Soldier, Grishnakh and an Uruk-Hai Berserker. The figures consist of Ugluk, Grima Wormtongue and Galadhrim Archer. As with all of the Two Towers products from Sideshow/Weta, these are limited, hand-numbered pieces. (My personal favorite is the Gandalf bust, its spot on!) [More]

SHOP: Gollum Action Figure Review - Xoanon @ 16:24 PST
From the folks at action-figure.com: So here's the story! At last week's UK ToyFair I mention a lot of your worries about Gollum: about how some of you have had cracks in your Cave Trolls and how you all had major worries about Gollum. Vivid were more than helpful, and told me to hang around for a moment, and went off out back. What they came back with was a Gollum figure, so I could bring you a review and 'hopefully' put all your worries to rest.

Howard Shore Tickets On eBay! - Xoanon @ 12:19 PST
Jolyon writes: I'm trying to find a home for two tickets that I am not able to use which I am sure would be of interest to LOTR fans in the UK.

The tickets are for the UK premier performance of the orchestral version of the Lord of the Rings score (9th February, Royal Festival Hall, London, UK), which will be conducted by the composer himself - the very Howard Shore! [More]

"The Art of The Two Towers" - Tehanu @ 05:39 PST
According to Buy.com the companion book to last year's "The Art of FOTR" will be available from March 13. "...this authoritative and insightful book is packed with more than five hundred full-color images - many exclusive to this volume - and shows the development of the imagery in The Two Towers from concept drawings to wide-screen glory." Thanks to Kathy for the link.

The Silmarillion as an MP3 audiobook. - Tehanu @ 05:14 PST
Larry writes in: "Audible.com is an outfit that sells downloaded books in an encoded, quasi-MP3 format. They are intended for commuters and others who feel they can split their attention between what they hear and what they do.

"The point is that they are offering The Silmarillion in three parts (i.e., three downloaded MP3-style "books"). The reader is superb. For people like me who just can't get into the printed book, this particular recording makes it fully accessible. It is still hard to get into, as the first hour is a "challenge", if you get my meaning. However, if you hang in there, it gets better and better. The reading is probably available from somebody else as a pile of tapes, but I prefer MP3 players.

"The best way to get books from Audible.Com is to subscribe for a year, whereupon they send you a player. However, you can make a single purchase, and download certain decoding software for certain players, if you have one that will accept it."
