DVD Tuesday: Bobby, Batman & More! - Xoanon @ 12:46 PST
36th Chamber of Shaolin: Hong Kong filmmaker Yau Kar-hung directed this standard Shaw Brothers historical action-comedy released at the tail end of the famous studio's mid-'80s decline. It tells yet another story about the oft-filmed heroes Hung Hei-kwun and Fong Sai-yuk, played here by Lo Mang and Wong Yue. Hung gets in trouble for offending the Ching chieftain Chih (genre veteran Lo Lieh), so he and Fong seek refuge in the Shaolin Temple, where they join the newly arrived South Pupils to learn the martial arts disciplines. Many of the students seem more interested in chasing girls and fooling around, upsetting the North Pupils (the Shaolin monks). Chief Chih shows up looking for Hung and Fong with fighters in tow, and the obligatory battle scene results, with the men of the Shaolin emerging victorious. Afterward, however, the monks come to the conclusion that Hung should be expelled from the temple because his primary goal in coming there was not to study, but to hide from Chief Chih. Naturally, Hung affirms his devotion to the ways of Shaolin and they let him stay, setting up yet another raid by Chief Chih and the obligatory final battle. Some interesting fight sequences are dragged out to feature length with extended comic scenes featuring the students playing pranks on the monks, but genre enthusiasts will still find enough to keep them interested. Also released in a drastically cut 84-minute version as Enter the 36th Chamber of Shaolin, the film co-stars Gordon Lau, Chin Siu-ho, and Phillip Kwok.

The Aura: On his first ever hunting trip, in the calm of the Patagonian forest, a shy taxidermist who secretly dreams of executing the perfect robbery stumbles upon an opportunity to make his dreams come true. Caught up in a world of complex new rules and frightening violence, his lack of experience puts him in real danger. And he has another complicated liability: he is an epileptic. Before each seizure he is visited by the “aura'': a paradoxical moment of confusion and enlightenment where the past and future seem to blend. These attacks appear without notice when he least expects them, just when he needs all his wits about him.

Batman: Complete Third Season: As if keeping the streets of Gotham City safe from crazies like The Joker, The Penguin and Scarface weren't enough, now The Batman has women problems! Best friends Barbara Gordon and Pamela Isley are spirited teens, passionate about their campaign of eco-terrorism against the city's corporate offenders. But when a strike against a chemical plant goes bad, their lives change forever and Gotham gains two more players in the showdown of good and evil! Barbara aka Batgirl becomes The Batman's feisty sidekick while Pamela aka Poison Ivy becomes the newest thorn in The Batman's side. With all 13 Season Three episodes, this 2-disc DVD collection delivers The Batman style with a jolt of girl power!

Beneath Still Waters: A supernatural force is devouring the village of Marinbad and its inhabitants, and is threatening to spread beyond its geographical limits. A group of men from the village manage to convince the authorities to build a dam, which would flood the valley and therefore submerge the village forever, sealing the evil force under water. But something remained down in the depths when the waters covered Marinbad. Now, 40 years later, an array of disappearances and deaths in mysterious circumstances are threatening the village built next to the reservoir that now covers Marinbad.

Blood Flood: Get ready to rumble with your Horror Hostess, Morella, a she reveals her All-Night Spooktacular Dusk-To-Dawn Horror-Thon! First of the Triple-Header is Grave of the Vampire (1974) starring William Smith and Michael Pataki. Certainly one of the strangest vampire films ever, this film revels in its own perversity as a mother cuts herself in order to feed her newborn monster baby! Boris Karloff heads south of the border to Mexico for House of Evil (1968) in which he plays the patriarch of a dysfunctional family who are being killed off one at a time by murderous toys! Karloff works the old pipe organ for all its worth as the place burns to the ground. Rarely seen in the U.S., this is the only Gothic horror Karloff appeared in among his four Mexican epics. Finally, what's a creepy night at the movies without something from schlockmeister par excellence, Andy Milligan? Here Morella unveils Guru, the Mad Monk, the only Millian opus filmed in 35mm. Marvel at the bad acting and threadbare historical costuming (reportedly created by the director himself!) and cringe at the blood and gore in an assault on the senses that will leave the viewer reeling. And it's all book-ended by three spooky episodes of Morella's Graveyard Theater, so sit back, unwind and get ready to stay up late!

Bobby: (Drama) A re-telling of the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel in 1968. The film follows 22 individuals who are all at the hotel for different purposes but share the common thread of anticipating Kennedy's arrival at the primary election night party, which would change their lives forever. This historic night is set against the backdrop of the cultural issues gripping the country at the time, including racism, sexual inequality and class differences.

By the Light of the Silvery Moon: The trials and tribulations of the Winfield family in small town Indiana as Marjorie Winfield's boyfriend, William Sherman, returns from the Army after W.W.I. Bill & Marjorie's on-again, off-again provide the backdrop for other family issues, primarily brought on by little brother Wesley's overactive imagination and tall tales.

Cinderella: The daughter of a female plastic surgeon begins to wonder why so many patients of her mother commit suicide and uncovers a dark secret.

Dead and Deader: After he's bitten by a beetle carrying a zombie virus, a tough soldier survives the infection, becoming only half zombie. Once back in the US, he finds himself fighting his former comrades in arms, all of whom are turning into zombies!

Dora-Heita: Samurai Koheita Mochizuki, who goes by the nickname Dora-Heita, meaning "alley cat" or "playboy," pretends to be an alcoholic magistrate but is in actuality an envoy from the daimyo sent to clean up the corrupt and lawless town. His task is complicated by the unexpected arrival of his mistress Kosei.

The Doris Day Collection, Vol. 2: Includes - Romance on the High Seas / My Dream Is Yours / On Moonlight Bay / I'll See You in My Dreams / By the Light of the Silvery Moon / Lucky Me

Flannel Pajamas: Relationships are never easy, but when two very opposite people are brought together by a well-meaning acquaintance in Flannel Pajamas, the result is an explosive love that overrides common sense. The spark between the meticulously honest and emotionally scarred Nicole and the self-absorbed Stuart who invents elaborate stories for a living is intense, and despite the fact that they can't stand each other's family and friends, the two are drawn together first by a mutual fascination and later by great sex. The pair move in together and eventually marry, choosing to ignore their insecurities and conflicts over religion, friendships, relatives, and careers, but the cold reality is that the day to day struggles over their inherent differences takes a significant toll on their happiness and threatens their relationships with one another and their friends and families. A compelling, sometimes painful exploration of the relationships between men and women, the artsy and powerful Flannel Pajamas stars Justin Kirk (Showtime's Weeds) and Julianne Nicholson (Law and Order: Criminal Intent ).

Hanna-Barbera Storybook Favorites: This collection of storybook favorites from animation giant Hanna-Barbera Productions includes timeless adaptations of Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty, Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels and James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans.

I'll See You in My Dreams: Songwriter Gus Kahn gets the Hollywood treatment. The film chronicles his success and decline, with his wife Grace sticking by him the whole time.

Jonestown: The Life & Death of Peoples Temple: Featuring never-before-seen footage, this documentary delivers a startling new look at the Peoples Temple, headed by preacher Jim Jones who, in 1978, led more than 900 members to Guyana, where he orchestrated a mass suicide via tainted punch.

King Boxer: Two martial arts schools prepare for an important tournament.

Le Petit Lieutenant: This French drama follows a newly recruited police officer, Antoine (Jalil Lespert), in Paris. Antoine's career is unremarkable, until the discovery of a dead body floating in the Seine changes his life forever.

Le Petit Lieutenant / Triple Agent - Combo Pack: This French drama follows a newly recruited police officer, Antoine (Jalil Lespert), in Paris. Antoine's career is unremarkable, until the discovery of a dead body floating in the Seine changes his life forever.

Little Murders: A girl brings home her latest boyfriend to meet her parents. This is done against the background of random shootings that had just begun in NYC at the time the play was written. How the family's failings are magnified by the social confusion of the times is the crux of the plot.

Lucky Me: Candy Williams is a struggling performer in a musical troupe, headed by Hap Schneider. Unfortunately, the troupe has fallen on hard times, forcing the members to get jobs cleaning hotel rooms. This all changes when one day Candy catches the eye of celebrity song writer, Dick Carson. Candy has no idea who he is, but, the rest of the troupe, especially Schneider, believes this is their lucky break. When Candy realizes who he really is, she's furious because he deceived her. By this time, Dick has "fallen head over heels" for Candy - this could be a problem, since he is currently dating another girl, Lorainne, the daughter of an oil tycoon. Dick secretly sits through one of Candy's performances, and is impressed, giving him a brilliant idea - Candy could perform the songs from the musical he has been preparing, and which he hopes Lorainne's father will finance. However, this is not going to be easy, since Lorainne has become very jealous, especially, when it comes to Candy getting closer to Dick.

Major League - Wild Thing Edition: An exotic dancer marries the owner of a baseball club. He does not survive the honeymoon and she is in control of his ball club. Looking at a small stadium, she wants to move to warmer climes where some new stadiums have been built, but her lease has only one escape clause, poor attendance. She fields the worst team she can find. The attitude of the owner gives the misfits and losers something to rally around and they fight back.

Mel Gibson Ultimate Collection: Includes - Braveheart / Payback - The Director's Cut / We Were Soldiers

My Dream Is Yours: Conceited singer Garry Mitchell refuses to renew his radio contract, so agent Doug Blake decides to find a new personality to replace Garry. In New York, he finds Martha Gibson, a single mother with a great voice. He arranges for her to move to Hollywood, but then has a problem trying to sell her to the show's sponsor. Doug tries every trick he can think of to make Martha a star, and as the two work more closely, he falls in love with her. Complicating matters further is when Martha meets and becomes attracted to Garry.

My Young Auntie: A young woman (Kara Hui) marries a dying senior member of a martial arts family in order to keep the inheritance from falling into the wicked hands of Third Uncle (Johnny Wang). Traditional family conventions are turned upside down when this 'grand auntie' by marriage arrives at the home of the rightful inheritor (Lau Kar-leung) and his progressive son (Hsiao Ho).

On Moonlight Bay: The Winfield family moves into a new house in a small town in Indiana. Tomboy Marjorie Winfield begins a romance with William Sherman who lives across the street. Marjorie has to learn how to dance and act like a proper young lady. Unfortunately William Sherman has unconventional ideas for the time (setting is during W.W.I, but the war does not play a major part for most of the movie.) His ideas include not believing in marriage or money, which causes friction with Marjorie's father, who is the local bank vice president.

One Armed Swordsman: Jimmy Wang Yu and David Chiang face off against each other in One Armed Swordsmen. The infamous One Armed Swordsman cuts off the arm of The Dragon Masked Bandit. While revenge is plotted, the Swordsman learns the true identity of the Masked Bandit.

Payback - The Director's Cut: In Brian Helgeland's new director's cut of the film, Mel Gibson portrays Porter, a career criminal bent on revenge after his partners in a street heist pump metal into him and take off with his $70,000 cut. Bad move, thugs. Because if you plan to double-cross Porter, you'd better make sure he's dead. Porter resurfaces, wading into a lurid urban underworld of syndicate kingpins, cops on the take, sniveling informants and deadly gangs. Porter wants his money back. And the way he sets out to get is assures that, from beginning to heart pounding end, Payback pays off big.

Perfect Couple: No description available

Phantasm: Mike, a young teenage boy who has just lost his parents, is afraid to lose his brother. This fear causes him to follow his brother to a funeral, where Mike witnesses the Tall Man lift a coffin on his own. Mike decides to investigate and discovers a horrible world where the Tall Man, along with his flying spheres, shrink the to half their normal size and reanimate them as slaves. It is then up to Mike, his brother, and Reggie the ice cream man to stop the Tall man.

Phantasm III: The Tall Man, that imposing menace from Morningside Mortuary, is back and once again haunting the thoughts of the now-adult Mike and his friend, ex-Ice Cream vendor Reggie. Slaughter Night: No description available

Sombre: Former video installation artist Philippe Grandieux made his feature directorial debut with this French psychological thriller that probes the mind of a serial killer. A hand-held camera follows murderer Jean (Marc Barbe) as he strangles French women while driving about France. When Claire (Elina Lowensohn) has a roadside car breakdown, she and her sister Christine (Geraldine Voillat) get a lift from the demented Jean, who later attacks Christine while she's at a lake for a swim. Back at the hotel, he menaces both sisters. Claire succeeds in extricating Christine, who leaves on a train for Paris -- while Claire makes the mistake of sticking around in order to "help" the crazed Jean. Shown in competition at the 1998 Locarno Film Festival where it provoked controversy and an official statement: "Half of the jury would like to call attention to Sombre. Our jury split between those who were morally offended by the film and those who saw a purpose in its darkness, and in the strength of its mise-en-scene and images."

Sons & Lovers: An adaptation of the D.H. Lawrence classic.

The Streets of San Francisco - Season 1, Vol. 1: A pair of plainclothes homicide detectives, Lt. Mike Stone and Inspector Steve Keller, cruise the streets of San Francisco solving a variety of crimes, usually involving murder. Stone is the street-smart 20-year veteran cop, and Keller is the college-educated rookie. Much of the series' success was due to the friendly by-play and relationship between the two leads.

Teen Titans: Complete Third Season: In a major city, Robin the Boy Wonder leads his own team of superheroes, The Teen Titans. With his teammates, the dark Raven, the powerful Cyborg, the flighty alien princess Starfire and the flippant Beast Boy; the team battles the forces of evil where ever they appear like the the enigmatic Slade, the diabolical Brother Blood or the malevolently cosmic Trigon.

The Thomas Mann Collection: Includes - Buddenbrooks / Doktor Faustus / The Magic Mountain

Tom Brown's Schooldays: Based on the classic novel of the same name by Thomas Hughes, Tom Brown’s Schooldays chronicles the trials and tribulations of young Tom Brown at Rugby School. In particular, the story focuses on Tom’s relationships with notorious bully Flashman and the kindly Master Arnold.

The Untouchables - Season One, Vol. 1: Though certainly tame by The Shield standards, the inaugural 14 episodes from The Untouchables' 1959-60 season are still as potent as a shot of Al Capone's bootleg whiskey. Dames get slapped around. Mugs are mowed down in a hail of wall-pocking, mirror-shattering bullets. Upstanding citizens are brutally terrorized by thugs. Incorruptible Feds are brazenly rubbed out. Sometimes, criminals have the last laugh. It has the visceral kick of watching one of those pre-code Hollywood movies produced before the Hays Office stepped in to sanitize objectionable content. This set opens with the theatrically released version of the two-part pilot episode that set the noir sensibility of the series. Robert Stack (in his iconic and oft-parodied role) stars as Elliot Ness, a straight-arrow Federal agent who forms a special squad of "reliable, courageous, dedicated and honest" men who initially take on Al Capone's corrupt criminal empire in 1929 Chicago. Ness is "a real man," (as a "burly-q" stripper observes). He's just not exactly loaded with personality. Nor do any other of the squad members stand out, except perhaps for Martin Flahrety, and that's only because he's played by a pre-Dick Van Dyke Show Jerry Paris. But from Neville Brand's Al Capone and Claire Trevor's Ma Barker to an unbilled Harry Dean Stanton as a suspect blind newspaperman, it's the legendary criminals and their henchmen (and the great character actors who portray them) who give each episode considerable moxie.

Dog Day Afternoon (HD DVD): Based upon true events, a New York man and two accomplices are besieged in a bank with all the bank employees after his attempt to rob enough money to pay for his male lover's sex change operation goes awry. What results is a two day media circus in which his private life and the humiliation of the police is laid bare for the whole city.

Payback - Straight Up - The Director's Cut (HD DVD): In Brian Helgeland's new director's cut of the film, Mel Gibson portrays Porter, a career criminal bent on revenge after his partners in a street heist pump metal into him and take off with his $70,000 cut.

Scanner Darkly (HD DVD): The L.A. of a not-too-distant future suffers a surge of drug abuse involving a new ultra-addictive and eventually brain-damaging substance simply named "D". Bob Arctor is an undercover narc leading a double life, dutifully reporting to his superiors while effectively having abandoned whatever normal existence he had for a "D" user/dealer career. But this schizophrenic situation and the drug-induced memory and concentration lapses put Bob under mounting stress.

DVD Tuesday: Charlotte's Web, Good Shepherd & More! - Xoanon @ 14:35 PST
ABC Wide World of Sports: 40 Years of Glory: ABC Wide World of Sports: 40 Years of Glory - (Sports) Relive over 40 years of sports’ pinnacles and perils pulled from the classic ABC shows.

All That Jazz - Music Edition: Choreographer-turned-director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Lenny) turns the camera on himself in this nervy, sometimes unnerving 1979 feature, a nakedly autobiographical piece that veers from gritty drama to razzle-dazzle musical, allegory to satire. It's an indication of his bravura, and possibly his self-absorption, that Fosse (who also cowrote the script) literally opens alter ego Joe Gideon's heart in a key scene--an unflinching glimpse of cardiac surgery, shot during an actual open-heart procedure. Roy Scheider makes a brave and largely successful leap out of his usual romantic lead roles to step into Gideon's dancing pumps, and supplies a plausible sketch of an extravagant, self-destructive, self-loathing creative dynamo, while Jessica Lange serves as a largely allegorical Muse, one of the various women that the philandering Gideon pursues (and usually abandons). Gideon's other romantic partners include Fosse's own protégé (and a major keeper of his choreographic style since his death), Ann Reinking, whose leggy grace is seductive both "onstage" and off. Fosse/Gideon's collision course with mortality, as well as his priapic obsession with the opposite sex, may offer clues into the libidinal core of the choreographer's dynamic, sexualized style of dance, but musical aficionados will be forgiven for fast-forwarding to cut out the self-analysis and focus on the music, period. At its best--as in the knockout opening, scored to George Benson's strutting version of "On Broadway," which fuses music, dance, and dazzling camera work into a paean to Fosse's hoofer nation--All That Jazz offers a sequence of classic Fosse numbers, hard-edged, caustic, and joyously physical.

Black Emanuelle's Box 1: The breathtakingly beautiful Laura Gemser stars as the infamous sexual adventuress in these three erotic epics now on DVD for the first time ever in America: Emanuelle In Bangkok - Emanuelle prowls the steamy underbelly of the Thai city on an odyssey of opium orgies, depraved Republicans and flying ping-pong balls. Emanuelle Around The World - In director Joe D'Amato's notorious jaw-dropper, Emanuelle uncovers a global conspiracy of enslaved women, kinky Senators and inappropriate uses for exotic pets. Sister Emanuelle - Emanuelle renounces her wanton ways and joins a convent for wayward schoolgirls, only to face temptation from some very unholy sins of the flesh.

Black X-Mas - Unrated: A remake of the 1974 horror movie Black Christmas. The movie tells the story about Billy, a young boy who was abused by his mother as a child. While his mother was cheating on Billy's father, she eventually killed his father and kept Billy in the attic - for good, while she was with her lover and starting a "new" family. As Billy's mother fell pregnant with a daughter and treated her with love, which Billy had never experienced with his mother, Billy came out of the attic after years and brutally murdered his mother and her lover. Cut to present day, a group of eight sorority sisters consisting of Kelli (Katie Cassidy), Dana (Lacey Chabert), Lauren (Crystal Lowe), Megan (Jessica Harmon), Claire (Leela Savasta), Heather (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Megan (Jessica Harmon) and Melissa (Michelle Trachtenberg) and their house mother (Andrea Martin),who now live in Billy's childhood home, find themselves being harassed by threatening and intimidating mystery phone-calls during Christmas Break and as one of the girls goes missing, the girls begin being murdered one by one by no other than Billy...

Bottom Feeder: Starring Tom Sizemore, this horror flick delves beneath the surface to find the monster lurking underneath.

The Brady Bunch - The Complete Series: Architect Mike Brady marries beautiful young Carol, who has three girls to care for. Likewise, Mike's previous wife's death has left him to raise his three boys all alone. In no time this amalgam becomes the ideal average American middle class family. Of course, raising such a large family isn't easy, so live-in housekeeper Alice Nelson is always there to lend a hand.

Charlotte's Web: E.B. White's classic tale gets a Babe-like makeover in Charlotte's Web, a delightful and well-made film that is sure to become a family classic. Directed by Gary Winick (13 Going on 30), the new version eschews the musical numbers of the 1973 cartoon and mixes CGI with live-action animals. Dakota Fanning brings the right amount of chutzpah to Fern, the young farm girl who rescues a runt, Wilbur, from death and visits him every day at her Uncle Homer's farm. But it's Wilbur's friendship with Charlotte the spider (voiced by Julia Roberts) that ultimately saves him from the "smoke house" (a kid-friendly alternative term to the slaughterhouse), for Charlotte's talent for weaving praiseworthy words about Wilbur into her web turns the Zuckerman farm into a tourist attraction. The more tragic elements of the book are handled sensitively by Winick, working from a script by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich), and Roberts' soothing, maternal voice (who knew it would work so well?) makes it all go down easy. It turns out to be just one of many perfect celebrity voice-casting choices, for the farm animals, voiced by an all-star cast including Oprah Winfrey (the goose), Robert Redford (the horse), Steve Buscemi (Templeton the rat), and John Cleese (the sheep), lend plenty of sharp humor. But it's two corn-hungry crows, voiced by Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) and OutKast's Andre "3000" Benjamin who steal the show.

Copying Beethoven: A passionate, powerful drama based loosely on the final months of Ludwig van Beethoven's life, Copying Beethoven finds the maestro a haunted man, composing the most revolutionary yet unappreciated work of his lifetime; largely deaf; disappointed in his relationship with a wastrel nephew; and fascinated by a young, female composer, Anna Holtz (Diane Kruger), who goes to work for him transcribing music. Staying as a guest at a convent and engaged to a stolid engineer, Anna is drawn to Beethoven’s tempestuous genius. Half the time he's enchanted by her and seems to see straight through to her soul. The other half, he's shouting at her for her timidity or flattery. Hardly a mouse, Anna fights back. The more she does, the more Beethoven recognizes in her a kindred survivor, someone with whom he can reveal his vulnerability and the burden of his artistry. Ed Harris' Beethoven is wracked by pain but not overwhelmed by it; he looks like a man who understands his responsibility to nature too well to merely disintegrate. ("God whispers in most men's ears," Beethoven says. "He shouts in mine.") Director Agnieszka Holland (Olivier, Olivier) oversees a handsome, alternately tender and brutal drama, with several thrilling moments, including the stunned look of audience members hearing the world premiere of the glorious 9th Symphony.

Death of a President: 'Death of a President' follows the investigation of the fictional assassination of President George W. Bush in October 2007. Combining real archival footage with a credible but fictional story, 'Death of a President' presents a fascinating and thought-provoking political thriller.

Defenders of the Earth - The Complete Series, Vol. 2: When Ming the Merciless returns to wreak havoc, he immediately hunts down the man who caused him to lose his throne in the first place, Flash Gordon. In the process, Ming captures and kills Dale Arden Gordon, but not before she transfers her esscence into a special crystal. Flash then gathers together a force made up of The Phantom, Mandrake the Magician and his assistant Lothar. Also joining the heroes are Flash's son Rick, The Phantom's daughter Jedda, Lothar's son L.J. and Madrake's adopted son Kshin. Rick then invents a super computer using the crystal with his mother's esscence. Joining Ming is his son Crotan.

Emanuelle Around the World: In one of the most infamous sex & sleaze sensations of the `70s, crusading journalist Emanuelle (the stunning Laura Gemser) goes all the way - and beyond - on a taboo-busting investigation into violence against women. This XXX Continental Edition contains scenes considered too graphic for sensitive audiences, including the all-woman Kama Sutra academy, the gang rape of Emanuelle's wanton colleague (Euro-starlet-turned-porno-queen Karin Schubert of CHRISTINA and BLACK VENUS), torrid lesbian liaisons, inappropriate use of exotic pets, the climactic defilement of a beauty queen by depraved U.S. Senators, and much more!

Entourage - Season Three, Part 1: With Vince's star expected to rise even higher in the Hollywood firmament as a result of his starring role in a potential blockbuster titled Aquaman, the boys must find a way to keep stroking their golden goose while making sound decisions for a long-lasting career in a world of fleeting fame.

Gene Autry Collection: Home in Wyomin: Radio star Gene Autry must solve a murder mystery at the Frontier Days pageant that involves Chicago gangsters, a deserted mine, and a surprise ending. Musical highlights are "Any Bonds Today" and "I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes."

Godzilla Raids Again: A death struggle between the indestructible monster and the Japanese people with both Godzilla and Gigantis destroying everything in the way.

Godzilla Raids Again: In this second entry of the Godzilla series, another monster is introduced to fight Godzilla. The new creature is called Anguirus and looks like a big spiked turtle. The two creatures wage their war in Japan and level cities along the way.

The Good Shepherd: A complicated movie about the Central Intelligence Agency and its agents, The Good Shepherd isn't your typical spy movie. Though it stars Matt Damon (The Bourne Identity films) and Angelina Jolie (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Lara Croft franchise)--actors with considerable experience in the action-espionage genre--The Good Shepherd requires that they play more subdued and (much less interesting) characters here. The movie focuses on the career or Edward Wilson (Damon), a privileged Yale graduate who goes on to help found the CIA. He is a quiet, serious, and guarded man, even in the most intimate moments with his civilian wife (Jolie, in a role that wastes her talent). Set against a backdrop of real-life events such as the Bay of Pigs, The Good Shepherd is meticulous in creating a realistic timeframe. The film gets a jolt of excitement when Robert DeNiro (in his first directing role since 1993's A Bronx Tale) peppers the screen with appearances by Joe Pesci, Alec Baldwin, and William Hurt. But those moments are too infrequent. At 157 minutes long, the film is crammed with many factual details, but the characters are shortchanged when it comes to development. Viewers have to wonder why anyone, much less someone like Wilson who has everything going for him, would devote his life to a thankless job that brings so little happiness to himself and his family. The Good Shepherd is an ambitious but flawed film. The actors do a formidable job with a well-intentioned but meandering script. However, we meet so many characters and learn so little about each that it's difficult to drum up much empathy for any of them.

Happy Tree Friends V02: They're cute, they're happy, they're cuddly, they love life, and they die in the most gruesome ways - every single episode. Meet Cuddles the rabbit, Flakey the dandruff-ridden porcupine, Sniffles the brainy anteater, Lumpy the moose, Toothy the beaver, Giggles the Chipmunk, Handy the handless carpenter beaver, Petunia the sweet-smelling skunk, Nutty the glass-eyed sweets-loving squirrel, Splendid the flying super-squirrel, Russell the pirate, the ever-dancing Disco Bear, Flippy the war veteran bear with constant flashbacks, Pop the pipe-smoking father bear and his cub Cub, Lifty the kleptomaic raccoon, Shifty, his partner in crime and of course the Mole - also blind as one. Together, they experience life at its worst in their cute little world. And they teach us all a lesson of what can go wrong, no matter how cute you are or how hard you try.

Jump In!: Jump roping that's worlds away from anything seen on the local playground bursts from the screen in this Disney Original Movie about the clash between two athletes and their respective sports. Boxer Izzy Daniels (Corbin Bleu) has a hard time taking neighbor Mary's (Keke Palmer) devotion to jump roping seriously, but as Izzy trains relentlessly to maintain his undefeated status and win the Golden Glove, Mary's team practices just as intensely for the city Double Dutch finals. Izzy gains a reluctant respect for Mary's sport when he accompanies his sister Karin (Kylee Russell) to a competition, but it takes some serious convincing to persuade him to fill in for a teammate who's abandon the team on the cusp of city finals. Izzy quickly discovers that Double Dutch is more demanding and rewarding than he'd ever imagined, but when the entire school finds out about his newest sporting exploit, he's taunted into quitting. As Izzy tries to regain his boxing focus, he suddenly realizes that winning the Golden Glove is more his father's (David Reivers) dream than his own. After some serious soul-searching, Izzy decides that he can't let what others think keep him from doing what makes him happy. This action-packed Disney Channel Original Movie takes a unique look at the varied world of sports and features some great catchy new music from Corbin Bleu and Jordan Pruitt, but the game-winner is its focus on the importance of following one's heart.

Karla: "That '70s Show star Laura Prepon is downright chilling in her portrayal of Karla Homolka. This movie is profound on many levels and its jarring look at anti-social behavior is right up there with Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Kids and Ken Park."

King Maker: In 1547 Fernando De Gama, a young "Soldier of Fortune" from Portugal, set sail for the Orient in a bid to find the man that murdered his father and, with luck, like many of his fellow countrymen,to make his fortune. A vicious storm in the Indian ocean almost ended his plans when the ship he was on sank. The sole survivor, he was washed up on a tropical beach only to be captured by Arab slavers and taken to Ayutthaya in the kingdom of Siam where he was offered for sale as a slave. He is rescued from slavery when a beautiful young woman Maria, also from Portugal, living in Ayutthaya with her father, buys him from the Arabs and restores his freedom. Not suprisingly he falls for Maria and Maria him, much to the chagrin of Maria's Father. As an experienced soldier his services are soon in demand when the King of Siam declares war on a Northern renegade pretender and all of the Portuguese colony are press-ganged into the service of the King. Predictably, Fernando's experience and gallantry in the heat of battle, gain favour with the King who commands him to be one of his honoured personal Guard along with a new found Thai friend of tremendous gallantry, Tong. Unbeknownst to the king, his beautiful but devious wife, Queen Sudachan, plots to kill him and place her lover on the throne. The first attempt by the Queen to rid herself of the king fails and she enlists the services of Phillippe, who it transpires was the murderer of Fernando's father. He in turn organises another failed attempt on the Kings life. As trusted guardians of the king, Fernando and Tong discover that Phillippe is involved but is killed during an attempt to arrest him. They subsequently discover that the perpetrator is the Queen but are to late to save the king who has already succumbed to her poison. The blame for the kings death is fostered upon Fernando and Tong who are arrested and forced to fight each other to the death for the amusement of Queen Sudachan and her lover, the new king.

Law & Order: Fifth Year: The show follows a crime, ususally adapted from current headlines, from two separate vantage points. The first half of the show concentrates on the investigation of the crime by the police, the second half follows the prosecution of the crime in court.

The Lost Room: If you're a fan of NBC's 2006 hit show Heroes, chances are you'll get a similar kick out of The Lost Room, a three-part, 4.5-hour Sci-Fi Channel miniseries originally broadcast in December 2006. It's pure hokum (especially when compared to Heroes, which rises from the same creative zeitgeist), and not nearly as clever at it initially seems to be, but there's something undeniably compelling about its premise, which turns everyday objects from the Kennedy era into powerful talismans of supernatural force. The present-day story is rooted in a dark, terrible, and cosmically reverberant incident that occurred in a remote motel room in 1961. Now it's 45 years later, and Detective Joe Miller (Six Feet Under's Peter Krause) has acquired a motel-room key that turns any door into a portal to "the lost room," a kind of alternate-reality no-man's-land, where his young daughter Anna (Elle Fanning, a look-alike for her older sister Dakota) soon goes missing. In his quest to retrieve her, Miller attracts the dangerous attention of various secret factions (with names like The Order, The Legion, and The Collectors) in heated competition to locate the many objects that hold strange powers and could, when gathered together, yield amazing benefits or tear reality apart.

Maburaho - Complete Collection: Ikki may not be a Storm Rider yet, but his battle with Buccha already has the AT pros talking. Unfortunately, his sudden popularity is attracting some unwanted attention from the leader of the Skull Saders, who is still bitter over his crushing defeat at the hands of a rookie. Now, with the Sleeping Forest emblem hanging in the balance, Ikki faces his rival in a gravity-defying race. Meanwhile, Ringo is torn between pulling Ikki into the dangerous world of Sleeping Forest and losing him to the sultry Simca. Onigiri has decided that he's more interested in riding girls than AT?s. Ikki?s teachers are threatening to hold him back. With new opponents and challenges at every turn, Ikki will have to rely on the strength of his friends to help him forge his road to the top.

Mario Bava Collection: Volume 1: More than a quarter of a century after his death, director Mario Bava remains one of international cinema’s most controversial icons. Today his influence — marked by stunning visuals, daring sexuality and shocking violence — can still be seen in the works of Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Tim Burton, Dario Argento and countless others in a legacy that extends far beyond the horror genre. This collection brings together 5 landmark movies from the first half of Bava’s career — encompassing the original giallo, a bold Viking epic, and his three gothic horror masterpieces — featuring new transfers, original European versions, and exclusive featurettes to create the definitive celebration of one of the most important filmmakers of all time.

Mind of Mencia - Uncensored Season 2: In Mind of Mencia, comedian host 'Carlos Mencia' takes on stereotypes associated with Hispanics and any other race known in the world. He doesn't care what anyone thinks of him and even mentions it on the show -- it's all in good humor to Carlos. While the show has many skits and sketches, Carlos also does stand up on his show and interacts with the audience on many occasions. The show was originally created to fill the void that "The Chappelle Show" left, but surpassed this aim and created a classical hit.

Mothra Vs Godzilla: After a fierce typhoon, a mysterious gigantic egg washes ashore. The twin fairies of Infant Island plea for the egg's return to Mothra, its rightful owner, but it's too late - greedy promoters have turned it into an amusement park attraction. Meanwhile Godzilla reawakens and tramples across Japan, heading straight for the big egg. Can Mothra save her offspring from Godzilla? Will Japan survive this epic monster battle? Directed by Ishiro Honda, MOTHRA VS. GODZILLA (1964) is widely considered the best of all Godzilla sequels, with an all-star Toho cast and exciting special effects. Classic Media presents the original Japanese-language version with English subtitles in glorious Toho Scope, plus the classic English-dubbed version originally released in the U.S. as GODZILLA VS. THE THING.

Mothra Vs Godzilla: A greedy developer has placed huge machines to suck dry a part of the ocean near Tokyo so he can put luxury condos there. After a storm, a giant egg washes up on the beach nearby and is immediately put on public display. The developer's plans go awry when he disrupts Godzilla's rest and the monster goes stomping through Tokyo again. It's up to the elderly Mothra, and then to its two offspring, to save Tokyo from destruction.

The Naked Brothers Band - The Movie: The Naked Brothers Band is a kid rock band that performs surprisingly catchy original songs written by 9-year-old Nat Wolff and performed by Nat, his 6-year-old brother Alex, and young friends Cole Hawkins, Allie DiMeco, Joshua Kaye, Thomas Batuello, and David Levi. Contrary to its name, the band performs fully clothed. The Naked Brothers Band--The Movie is a mockumentary comedy that blends the story of Nat and Alex's sudden and sometimes difficult road to stardom with a satirical take on the popular rockumentary genre with its requisite focus on the stormy, sordid details of the lives of famous musicians. Produced by Nat and Alex's mother Polly Draper (thirtysomething) and jazz musician father Michael Wolff (The Arsenio Hall Show"), the movie follows Nat, Alex, and the other band members through home footage of the band's early preschool days (when they did indeed perform mostly naked and simply banged away on whatever was handy to make "music") to more professional footage of current day concerts which highlight a remarkably poised group of young musicians performing increasingly popular songs like "Crazy Car" and "Got No Mojo." Interview footage makes up the bulk of the program and is immensely satirical, featuring exaggerated scenes that detail Nat's uneasy habit of speaking to Rosalina (Allie DiMeco) with a fake accent to cover his attraction to her, Alex's development of a lemon-lime soda addiction that lands him in a rehabilitation Soda-holics at Sea program, and Alex's tendency toward inappropriate "potty-mouth" remarks. Obviously, guest stars like Arsenio Hall, Cyndi Lauper, and Uma Thurman found the parallels to the extreme behavior of famous adult personalities humorous, but what speaks to some as a funny spoof on the Hollywood rockumentary genre is so over-done that other viewers will find it distasteful, offensive, and/or inappropriate for children.

National Geographic - Galapagos: The inspiration for Darwin's theory of evolution, the Galapagos Islands are a living laboratory, a geological conveyor belt that has given birth to and seen the death of many species of plants and animals. As the western islands rise up from the sea offering a chance of life, the eastern islands sink back beneath the waves guaranteeing only death. Between the two are the middle islands; fertile, lush land in its prime that contains an incredible diversity of life. Nowhere else on the Earth are the twin processes of creation and extinction of species so starkly apparent... see it all unfold before your eyes in this stunning series filmed entirely in high definition from the BBC and the National Geographic Channel.

Natural: An unknown middle-aged batter named Roy Hobbs with a mysterious past appears out of nowhere to take a losing 1930s baseball team to the top of the league in this magical sports fantasy. With the aid of a bat cut from a lightning struck tree, Hobbs lives the fame he should have had earlier when, as a rising pitcher, he is inexplicably shot by a young woman.

The Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection, Volume 5 - Ant Aardvark: The Pink Panther: The Ant & The Aardvark Classic Cartoon Collection features all 17 episodes of the original cartoon series. For the first time on DVD, parents can relive the hilarity as these two characters go head to head.

Roseanne - Season 7: 'Roseanne' is the story of middle class family struggling with life's essential problems: Marriage, Children, Money and Parent's in Law. A classic sitcom, the story circles around the Connor family - a family of five (DJ, Darlene, Becky, Roseanne and Dan). The household's mother, Roseanne, is being accompanied in her quest to keep the family together by her sister Jackie and various friends over the years.

She-Ra Season 1 V02 Box Set: Princess Adora raises her magic sword and becomes She-Ra, the most powerful woman in the universe, to aid her friends in defeating the Evil Horde so their planet Etheria can be free.

Spys: Just because the CIA accidentally killed two KGB spies, the Russians want to kill two American agents. Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould are nominated.

Threat: Deluxe Edition: THREAT is an award-winning and controversial urban thriller that has earned its maverick filmmakers both accolades and condemnations for its heady brew of street philosophy and ultraviolence. White straightedge punk-rocker Jim and black hip-hop radical Fred become friends working dead-end jobs in NYC's Lower East Side, both of them with the hope that their newfound brotherhood will bring solidarity to their disparate communities. Instead, the alliance triggers a violent race riot that spills into the city streets with devastatingly tragic consequences.

Tom Goes to the Mayor:Complete Series: Tom Peters has just moved to the small town of Jefferton, best known for its strip malls, buffet restaurants and run-down parks. Seeking to make a name for himself, Tom begins setting up meetings with the eccentric mayor of the town. Together, they develop a number of pointless ideas that never seem to go anywhere. Sometimes they seem to make things worse.

Twin Peaks Second Season: The body of a young girl (Laura Palmer) is washed up on a beach near the small Washington state town of Twin Peaks. FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper is called in to investigate her strange demise only to uncover a web of mystery that ultimately leads him deep into the heart of the surrounding woodland and his very own soul.

Volver: From two-time Academy Award®-winner Pedro Almodovar (2003, Best Original Screenplay, Talk to Her; 2000, Best Foreign Language Film, All About My Mother) comes Volver, a comedic and compassionate tribute to women and their resilience in the face of life's most outrageous tribulations. A luminous Penelope Cruz leads an ensemble of gifted actresses, including Carmen Maura (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown). Raimunda (Cruz) and her sister Sole lost their parents in a tragic fire years ago, or did they? Superstitious villagers claim that the girls departed mother, Irene (Maura), has been seen wandering around their Aunt Paula's home. When Irene appears to Sole, she explains that she has returned to set right her daughters' troubled lives and reveal shocking secrets that will impact everyone! Raimunda has "female troubles" of her own, least of which is a corpse in the freezer! Winner of numerous film festival and critics' awards, Volver is a hilarious tale of love, loss and forgiveness.

Woman Is the Future of Man: Like Wong Kar-wai and Tsai Ming-liang, New Korean Cinema luminary Hong Sangsoo marries Asian and European sensibilities. Michael Atkinson in The Village Voice cannily dubbed him "the love child Antonioni and Hou Hsiao-hsien never had," while Woman Is the Future of Man could be described as a postmodern, post-romantic riff on Rashomon and Jules and Jim, refracting an unstable ménage à trois through two misaligned perspectives. The film's ruefully comic view of modern love centers on the Mutt-and-Jeff dynamic between two mismatched buddies - tall, placid art professor Munho and short, volatile filmmaker Hunjoon - who share an inconsistent passion for the same woman, artist turned-bar-girl Sunhwa. Shuttling between the summery past and the snowy present, the two recently reunited friends drunkenly recall their failed relationships with Sunhwa, littered with broken promises, fumbled opportunities, and sexual gaucheries (no one but Hong captures the indelicacies of the bedroom with such wincingly unsanitized candor). Employing a hyper-observant camera style acutely sensitive to quicksilver shifts in the emotional weather, Woman Is the Future of Man is a wry, wistful discourse on the immaturity of men, the fickleness of memory, and the elusiveness of love.

The Good Shepherd (HD DVD): A complicated movie about the Central Intelligence Agency and its agents, The Good Shepherd isn't your typical spy movie.

Gi Jane (Blu-ray): When a crusading chairperson of the military budget committee pressures the would be Navy secretary to begin full gender integration of the service, he offers the chance for a test case for a female trainee in the elite Navy SEALS commando force. Lt. Jordan O'Niel is given the assignment, but no one expects her to succeed in an inhumanly punishing regime that has a standard 60% dropout rate for men. However, O'Niel is determined to prove everyone wrong.

Identity (Blu-ray): Strangers from all different walks of life: a limo driver escorting a movie star, parents with a young son, a cop transporting a convict, a prostitute, a young couple, and a motel manager are caught up in a nasty rainstorm, stuck at a motel in desolate Nevada. Soon they realize they may be at the motel for another reason when one by one, people start getting killed off. As tensions flare and fingers are pointed, they have to get to the bottom of why they're there. Meanwhile in an undisclosed location, a psychiatrist is trying to prove the innocence of a man accused of murder in an eleventh hour trial. How these two through-lines are related can only be found in Identity.

King Arthur (Blu-ray): From the producer of PEARL HARBOR and the director of TRAINING DAY, the Extended Director's Cut of KING ARTHUR explodes onto Blu-ray Disc® in a blaze of hard-hitting action and glory not seen in theaters. Prepare for unsurpassed thrills as history's greatest legend roars to life in this astonishing new format. Now the adventure is longer, grittier and more explicit in this valiant tale of Arthur (Clive Owen), Guinevere (Keira Knightley), Lancelot (Ioan Gruffudd), and the Knights Of The Roundtable. Behold the pageantry and power of every fierce battle in spectacular 1080p, while swords clash and fortresses are pounded in thunderous 5.1 48 kHz, 24-bit uncompressed audio. Catapult your entertainment experience into another realm with Blu-ray™ High Definition!

DVD Tuesday: Children, Happy Feet & More! - Xoanon @ 10:43 PST
7th Heaven - The Complete Fourth Season: From leading television producer Aaron Spelling comes 7th Heaven, a critically acclaimed family drama about a minister, his wife and their seven children. The WB's highest-rated series, 7th Heaven has captured the hearts of television audiences with its witty, charming and heartwarming storytelling and has been praised for providing high-quality entertainment for all ages.

The Addams Family - Season 2: The Addams Family is not your typical family: they take delight in most of the things that "normal" people would be terrified of. Gomez Adams is an extremely wealthy man, and is able to indulge his wife Morticia's every desire: be it cultivation of poisonous plants, or a candlelit dinner in a graveyard. People visiting the Addams Family just don't seem to appreciate the 7 foot tall butler "Lurch" or the helping hand (which is just a disembodied hand named "Thing").

Adventures of Don Juan: Errol Flynn's farewell to big-budget swashbuckling has him playing the legendary Don Juan, the Spanish lover who fights to save the Queen Margaret and her King from the treacherous machinations of her minister Duke de Lorca.

Albert Fish: Albert Fish, the horrific true story of elderly cannibal, sadomasochist, and serial killer, who lured children to their deaths in Depression-era New York City. Distorting biblical tales, Albert Fish takes the themes of pain, torture, atonement and suffering literally as he preys on victims to torture and sacrifice. From John Borowski, award-winning director of H.H. Holmes: America's First Serial Killer, comes the first ever docudrama to definitively recount the life and times of elderly cannibal Albert Fish. Adding insight to the account are interviews with artist and Odditorium owner, Joe Coleman, and renowned true-crime author, Katherine Ramsland, Ph.D.

Best of Flatt & Scruggs TV Show 1: Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs are two of the founding fathers of bluegrass music and their names are legendary to any fan of bluegrass. The "Best Of The Flatt and Scruggs TV Show" consists of live music performances with their group the Foggy Mountain Boys from a never before available TV show they did in their prime in the 1950s and early 1960s. These releases will be a major event in the bluegrass community and with bluegrass fans worldwide.

Best of Flatt & Scruggs TV Show 2: Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs are two of the founding fathers of bluegrass music and their names are legendary to any fan of bluegrass.

Blue Bird: Mytyl and her brother Tyltyl, a woodchopper's children, are led by the Fairy Berylune on a magical trip through the past, present, and future to locate the Blue Bird of Happiness. Written by Jim Beaver {jumblejim@prodigy.net} A Germanic, gingerbread story, a little like Hansel and Gretel, which visits the future and the past and looks at the range of human nature. Though beautifully filmed it was Shirley Temple's first box office flop.

Burst Angel Box Set: The genre-bending anime series BURST ANGEL blends sci-fi, action, comedy, and even a touch of Spaghetti Western into a thrilling girls-with-guns confection. In futuristic Tokyo, a new law that allows citizens to openly carry guns has actually led to an increase in crime, and a shadowy organization known as RAPT (Recent Armed Police of Tokyo) actively encourages violence in order to profit from the chaos. A quartet of scantily clad young women named Jo, Sei, Amy, and Meg stride into this anarchic milieu and attempt to bring a sense of order and justice to the lawless land with their gunslinging ways and leather chaps. This volume features the violent and sexy anime series in its entirety.

Candy: Oscar®-nominee Heath Ledger stars as Dan, a charming but reckless young poet who falls in love with Candy (Abbie Cornish), a beautiful young student who is attracted to his bohemian lifestyle. In order to get closer to Dan, Candy joins him in his drug addiction. Their passionate relationship then alternates between bursts of ecstatic oblivion and bouts of despair and self-destruction. Hooked as much on heroin as one another, their story becomes an intense love triangle – a boy, a girl, and a drug.

Cast Away (Special Edition Director's Cut): After FedEx systems engineer Chuck Noland is ripped out of his hasty life by the clock in a plane crash, he finds himself alone on the shores of a tropical island. First, frustration gets to him and then he realizes how little his chances are to ever get back to civilisation. Four years later, Chuck has learned very well how to survive on his own: mending his dental health, catching fish with a spear, predicting the weather with a selfmade calendar. A photograph of his girlfriend Kelly has kept his hopes alive all these years. Finally, Chuck takes the opportunity to take off for home: He sets off on a wooden raft with a sail that has washed ashore.

Charge of Light Brigade: Why is The Charge of the Light Brigade so rarely even mentioned among Errol Flynn's swashbucklers? It's a terrific movie, something like the peak of spectacular Hollywood action filmmaking and the bravura style of Michael Curtiz. The setting--till the Crimean War climax--is the Indian frontier (impersonated, as so often, by rocky Lone Pine, California), where the 27th Bengal Lancers run afoul of an Oxford-educated slime named Surat Khan (C. Henry Gordon). Flynn and Olivia de Havilland bring real tenderness to two-thirds of a romantic triangle (the other corner is the hero's brother, Patric Knowles). There's the fearsome siege of Chukoti, an unspeakable atrocity, and finally the foolhardy, inspired Charge at Balaklava. The camerawork and editing of that grand sequence never cease to astonish. History (and political correctness) is better served by the 1968 Tony Richardson movie, but for unabashed epic sweep and matchless thrills, this is the one you want.

Children of Men: Presenting a bleak, harrowing, and yet ultimately hopeful vision of humankind's not-too-distant future, Children of Men is a riveting cautionary tale of potential things to come. Set in the crisis-ravaged future of 2027, and based on the atypical 1993 novel by British mystery writer P.D. James, the anxiety-inducing, action-packed story is set in a dystopian England where humanity has become infertile (the last baby was born in 2009), immigration is a crime, refugees (or "fugees") are caged like animals, and the world has been torn apart by nuclear fallout, rampant terrorism, and political rebellion. In this seemingly hopeless landscape of hardscrabble survival, a jaded bureaucrat named Theo (Clive Owen) is drawn into a desperate struggle to deliver Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey), the world's only pregnant woman, to a secret group called the Human Project that hopes to discover a cure for global infertility. As they carefully navigate between the battling forces of military police and a pro-immigration insurgency, Theo, Kee, and their secretive allies endure a death-defying ordeal of urban warfare, and director Alfonso Cuaron (with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki) capture the action with you-are-there intensity. There's just enough humor to balance the film's darker content (much of it coming from Michael Caine, as Theo's aging hippie cohort), and although Children of Men glosses over many of the specifics about its sociopolitical worst-case scenario (which includes Julianne Moore in a brief but pivotal role), it's still an immensely satisfying, pulse-pounding vision of a future that represents a frightening extrapolation of early 21st-century history.

Color Me Kubrick: The true story of a man who posed as director Stanley Kubrick during the production of Kubrick's last film, Eyes Wide Shut, despite knowing very little about his work and looking nothing like him.

Curse of the Golden Flower: China, Later Tang Dynasty, 10th Century. On the eve of the Chong Yang Festival, golden flowers fill the Imperial Palace. The Emperor (Chow Yun Fat) returns unexpectedly with his second son, Prince Jai (Jay Chou). His pretext is to celebrate the holiday with his family, but given the chilled relations between the Emperor and the ailing Empress (Gong Li), this seems disingenuous. For many years, the Empress and Crown Prince Wan (Liu Ye), her stepson, have had an illicit liaison. Feeling trapped, Prince Wan dreams of escaping the palace with his secret love Chan (Li Man), the Imperial Doctor's daughter. Meanwhile, Prince Jai, the faithful son, grows worried over the Empress's health and her obsession with golden chrysanthemums. Could she be headed down an ominous path? The Emperor harbors equally clandestine plans; the Imperial Doctor (Ni Dahong) is the only one privy to his machinations. When the Emperor senses a looming threat, he relocates the doctor's family from the Palace to a remote area. While they are en route, mysterious assassins attack them. Chan and her mother, Jiang Shi (Chen Jin) are forced back to the palace. Their return sets off a tumultuous sequence of dark surprises. Amid the glamour and grandeur of the festival, ugly secrets are revealed. As the Imperial Family continues its elaborate charade in a palatial setting, thousands of golden armored warriors charge the palace. Who is behind this brutal rebellion? Where do Prince Jai's loyalties lie? Between love and desire, is there a final winner? Against a moonlit night, thousands of chrysanthemum blossoms are trampled as blood spills across the Imperial Palace.

Dark Ride: After Dark Horror Fest: Nearly a decade after two young girls are brutally murdered, the monstrous killer, Jonah, escapes from a mental institution and returns to his familiar killing ground, the theme park attraction "Dark Ride." His unfortunate victims this time are a group of college kids on a road trip that inevitably leads them to the Dark Ride where their night of youthful fun becomes a nightmare. The killer, who is mimicking the sets within the attraction, makes sure this is a "ride" audiences will never forget.

Dawn Patrol: Errol Flynn and David Niven star as roustabout French Corp fighter pilots who come face-to-face with the harsh realities of war. Basil Rathbone is outstanding as the Squadron Commander.

Deep Sea: Dive in! A sea full of wonders awaits. Famed oceanic filmmaker Howard Hall (Into the Deep) guides this immersive adventure that lets you swim alongside some of the most exotic creatures of the planet. Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet provide the narration. And an unusual array of finned and scaled stars are ready to steal every scene. Among them: Green Sea Turtles who gather off Kona so that Surgeonfish can strip harmful algae from their shells...an ominous, predatory Humboldt Squid that changes color four times per second like a flashing strobe light...an underdog Mantis Shrimp, whose claws have the speed of a 22-caliber bullet, in battle against a hungry octopus (the shrimp wins!). So many creatures. So many amazing stories. Sea them all.

Dick Van Dyke: In Rare Form: Before he became a star from his performances in BYE-BYE BIRDIE, MARY POPPINS and CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, as well as on his own popular sitcom, Dick Van Dyke honed his comedy chops on television panel and variety shows. This revelatory and highly entertaining collection of vintage performances -- many not seen since the 1950s -- showcase a comic legend in the making. "In Rare Form" features classic monologue, pantomime and song & dance routines from the 1958-59 season of THE PAT BOONE CHEVY SHOWROOM. In those days, singer-actor Pat Boone would present fresh new talent to the nation's TV viewers… and he returns to repeat the feat in brand-new introductions made exclusively for this collection. Highlights include some of Dick's most hilarious and beloved routines: "Babysitting Father", "Mailing A Letter On A Windy Corner", "Daddy’s Little Girls", "The Pet Cat", "Sneaking In" and "The Tennis Champ" as well as song performances with Pat Boone and Shirley Jones.

Dive Bomber: Visually exciting WWII drama about two naval officers who are trying to understand and prevent altitude sickness. The two men must get past their personal differences in order to conduct the experiments necessary to save lives.

Dust Devil: The Final Cut: A shape shifter comes from the desert in search of victims, a spirit the locals call the dust devil. He prays on the lonely and the unloved, those that have already lost everything but life itself. Wendy has broken up with her husband and wanders aimlessly in her car. She picks up a stranger and begins having misgivings about picking him up when strange things begin to occur. Meanwhile a local police officer tracks the killer. Aided by a shaman's admonishments about witchcraft he sets off to try and stop the beast before it can complete its grisly task.

Early Bergman: Includes - Torment / Crisis / Port of Call / Thirst / To Joy) (Criterion Collection / Eclipse)

The Errol Flynn Signature Collection, Vol. 2: Includes - The Charge of the Light Brigade / Gentleman Jim / The Adventures of Don Juan / The Dawn Patrol / Dive Bomber

Family Affair Season Three: Family Affair was a popular situation comedy and a regular top 20 hit show produced by Don Fedderson Productions for CBS-TV during its five-year run from 1966-71. Brian Keith stars as bachelor Bill Davis, a highly-paid engineering consultant who lives in a posh Manhattan apartment with his proper English manservant, Mr. Giles French (Sebastian Cabot). Davis’ carefree existence is turned upside down when his brother and sister-in-law die suddenly in a tragic plane accident, leaving their three children orphaned. Davis becomes an instant father figure to six year-old twins, Buffy and Jody (Anissa Jones, Johnnie Whitaker) and their big sister, Cissy (Kathy Garver). In Season 3, Jody accepts a dare to clip Mr. French’s beard to get into an exclusive club, Buffy brings an early Christmas to a sick little girl, Cissy yearns to become a hippie, Mr. French is cast in a movie about Henry the VIII and Uncle Bill considers marriage to a beautiful (but child-hating) Italian girl.

Full House:Complete Sixth Season: The laughs and lessons keep on coming in the sixth season! Join the Tanners once again for another hilarious season of Full House. Watch as Danny struggles to maintain a long-distance relationship, DJ goes to Prom, Michelle learns you don't get everything you want, Stephanie has to make an important decision and Becky and Jesse decide on pre-schools! Don't miss the latest antics of the Tanners in the complete sixth season for the first time ever on DVD!

Gentleman Jim: The biography of famed boxer James J. "Gentleman Jim" Corbett, the colorful Irish-American fighter who became the first heavyweight champion of the world under the new Marquis of Queensberry rules.

Gravedancers: After Dark Horror Fest: After a night of drunken exploits, Allison, Harris, and Kira are chased and terrorized by the ghosts of a child pyromaniac, an ax murderer, and a rapist.

Hacking Democracy: The disturbingly shocking HBO documentary HACKING DEMOCRACY bravely tangles with our nation's ills at the heart of democracy. The film the Diebold corporation doesn't want you to see, this revelatory profile follows a tenacious grandmother from Seattle, Bev Harris, and her band of extraordinary citizen-activists as they set out to ask one simple question: How does America count its votes? From Florida and California to Ohio and Washington State, filmmakers Simon Ardizzone, Robert Cohens, and Russell Michaels starkly reveal a rotten system riddled with inaccuracy, incompetent election officials, and electronic voting machines that can be programmed to steal elections. Equipped only with a powerful sense of righteous outrage, the activists take on voting machine manufacturer Diebold, exposing unsettling security holes in the company's equipment. They even go dumpster diving at a county election official's office in Florida, uncovering incendiary evidence of miscounted votes.

Happy Feet: In the cold land of Antarctica, the Emperor Penguins each express their true love with a special heartsong of their own that expresses their very being. However, the misfit Mumble cannot sing, but instead has an extraordinary talent to tap dance with almost magical energy and expression. Nevertheless, the deeply conformist leadership of the colony fearfully blames the young penguin's unorthodox ways for the lean fishing that threatens them all. Defiant in the face of unjust rejection, Mumble and his true friends set out to find the true cause of the famine. Through the motley crew's trials and perils, Mumble learns many things about his frozen world, not the least of which being that his toe tapping talent may be what he needs to save his people.

He-Man V02 Box Set: He-Man is the legendary "Most Powerful in the Universe" and the mighty warrior of the planet Eternia and defender of the mysterious Castle Greyskull. With his special powers and with his weapon, The Sword of Greyskull, He-Man fought the evil Skeletor who bid to rule Eternia and discover the secrets of Greyskull. He-Man has been summoned to the planet "Primus", a world under threat from a band of evil mutants from the nearby planet "Denebria". But Skeletor has joined forces with the mutants in his goal of universal conquest. With help from his new companions: The Galactic Guardians, a loyal squadron of soldiers led by Captain Hydron and Lt. Flipshot, Teenage girl Drissi and her brother Caz and Darius, head of the galactic council. He-Man sets out to defend Primus from Skeletor and the mutants.

Hundra: Born in a tribe of fierce warrior women, Hundra has been raised to despise the influence of men. An archer, fighter and sword fighter, Hundra is superior to any male. Hundra finds her family slain and takes a vow of revenge until one day she meets her match.

Jeffersons-6th Season: The Jeffersons was a breakthrough series – the first television show to feature a well-to-do African American family living in luxury. In its sixth season, the show remained fresh thanks to the unconventional wit of series developer Norman Lear (TV’s "All in the Family" and "Good Times") and its very popular characters including loud-mouthed George Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley), his long-suffering wife Louise (Isabel Sanford), and their wise-cracking maid Florence (Marla Gibbs). Highlights this season include the two-part "The Arrival," where Lionel (Mike Evans), returning to the role he originated) and wife Jenny (Berlinda Tolbert) welcome baby Jessica (leave it to George to worry about the color of the baby) and the "Brother Tom," where George teaches Tom Willis (Franklin Cover) how to act black in order to impress his wife Helen (Roxie Roker). A landmark of classic TV, the sixth season of The Jeffersons tackled taboos while delivering the biggest laughs ever.

Little Rascals Box Set: Best of Our Gang - Spanky, Buckwheat, Porky at their hilarious best in their adventures with haunted houses, homemade fire engines, and the "Wild Man of Borneo". Best of Spanky - Spanky and his friends discover magic lamp, play mud football, and put on a musical dressed as girls! Superstars of Our Gang - The Little Rascals scare off their teacher’s suitor, take a crazy cab ride and strike a unusual deal with a toy store owner – until Pete the dog destroys his shop!

Lock Up: "This is hell and I'm going to give you a guided tour!" With these chilling words, the warden (Donald Sutherland) welcomes Frank Leone (Sylvester Stallone) to Gateway Prison, a nightmare jail where every minute is hard time. The warden wants vengeance for the past; Leone wants only to survive the present. Their explosive battle of wills is the electrifying heart of one of Stallone's most heroic thrillers, LOCK UP. Stallone gives a monumental performance as Leone, a convict driven to break his own cherished code by a warden who will stop at nothing to get him.

Mary Hartman-Mary Hartman-V01: Legendary TV producer Norman Lear developed this outrageous soap-opera spoof staring Louise Lasser as a pigtailed, gingham-frocked housewife beset by a bewildering array of crises. The three-disc set features the first 25 episodes of the groundbreaking series hailed by critics as "hilarious" (TV Guide), "mind-blowing" (Newsweek) and "televisions zaniest show!" (Readers Digest) Mass murders, kidnappings and a flasher may be troubling the residents of Fernwood, Ohio. But housewife Mary Hartman (Lasser) has a much more serious problem; waxy yellow buildup on her kitchen floor. And while her husband Tom (Greg Mullavey) struggles in the bedroom and her best friend, country singer Loretta Haggers (Mary Kay Place), struggles to make it big in Nashville, Mary teeters closer to the edge, desperate to save her marriage, keep her family together and give her kitchen floor a proper shine!

One Foot in the Grave:Season 1: The BAFTA-nominated series about the growing pains of growing old is finally on DVD! Forced into early retirement, Victor Meldrew optimistically tries to adjust to years of leisure with his wife Margaret. If only events -- coincidences, misunderstandings, bureaucratic inefficiencies and sheer bad luck -- didn't conspire against him.

One Foot in the Grave:Season 2: The BAFTA nominated series about the growing pains of growing old is finally on DVD! Life continues to throw more slings and arrows at Victor as he and Margaret move to a new house. Next door, the cheerful but terminally boring Nick Swainey seems intent on disturbing Victor's peaceful retirement, while on the other side Patrick and Pippa's lives are made a misery from the moment they first meet the Meldrews.

Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes: Horror icon Doug Bradley (Hellraiser movies) and Lance Henriksen (Alien vs. Predator, Scream 3) star in this riveting continuation of the Pumpkinhead series. When the residents of a small town discover that their local mortician has been dumping the corpses of their loved ones into a swamp, rather than properly cremating them, they seek the assistance of a witch named Haggis to mete out justice. Haggis summons the demon Pumpkinhead to kill those responsible for the desecration. The only thing that can stop Pumpkinhead is an eccentric, small-town physician with an illegal donor business who is set on killing the townspeople who have unleashed the demon.

The Pursuit of Happyness: Will Smith stars in the inspirational true story of Chris Gardner, a San Francisco salesman who's struggling to make ends meet. When his girlfriend Linda (Thandie Newton) walks out, Chris is left to raise their 5-year-old son Christopher (Jaden Smith) on his own. Chris' determination finally pays off when he lands an unpaid internship in a brutally competitive stockbroker-training program, where only one in twenty interns will make the cut. But without a salary, Chris and his son are evicted from their apartment and are forced to sleep on the street, in homeless shelters and even behind the locked doors of a metro station bathroom. With self- confidence and the love and trust of his son, Chris Gardner rises above his obstacles to become a Wall Street legend.

Roman: Roman (Lucky McKee) is a lonely young man who yearns to find love, happiness and companionship. Tormented by his ungrateful co-workers and trapped in a life of tedium as a welder in a local factory, Roman's one pleasure is his obsession with the elusive beauty (Kristen Bell) who lives in the apartment in his building complex. When a chance encounter with the young woman goes horribly wrong, a moment of frenzied desperation triggers a chilling turn of events leading to murder. As he teeters between deranged fantasy and cold reality, Roman's struggle to hide his grisly secret is further complicated by an eccentric neighbor (Nectar Rose) who develops an unlikely attraction to Roman and forces herself into his dark and tortured world.

Samurai 7 Box Set: The broadcast series Samurai 7 (2004) borrows the premise of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954): driven to desperation by bandits who steal their crops, the inhabitants of a small village hire unemployed samurai to defend them. With nothing to offer as wages but their precious rice, the villagers recruit warriors poor enough to accept the dishonor of working for peasants. Samurai 7 moves the story into the future: the bandits and some of the samurai are mecha. The grim ronin Kambei leads the viewers in the defense of their village, then tackles the forces of the orchidaceous emperor Ukyo. Kambei and his mismatched band attack the Capitol,Ukyo's equivalent of the Death Star. The warriors perform gravity-defying leaps, as they slash through steel plating, deflect bullets, and split laser beams with their swords in a climactic battle that occupies most of the last three episodes. The drawn/CG combinations reveal why Samurai 7 cost a reported ¥32,500,000 (nearly $300,000) per episode, an extremely high price by Japanese standards.

Sonic The Hedgehog - The Complete Series: The compete series available for the first time ever on a 4-DVD box set! Sonic the Hedgehog (voiced by Family Matters' Jaleel White), super fast and irreverent, leads a group of freedom fighters bent on restoring their planet's beauty and freeing its citizens from the tyranny of the evil Dr. Robotnik. The fusion of powerful storylines, witty banter and a dark atmosphere made Sonic The Hedgehog--dubbed SatAM by its legions of fans--a favorite among youngsters and teens when it premiered on ABC in 1993. Inspired by the phenomenon that took the gaming world by storm, Sonic The Hedgehog likewise broke through the barriers of what was expected of a Saturday morning cartoon. Now all 26 episodes are available in this action-packed collectors box set, along with awesome bonus features!

To Heart 1: New Feelings: To Heart is a short television series that only goes for thirteen episodes. Unfortunately, most of the episodes follow the same pattern. Hiroyuki and the others meet a new girl at school with some weird quirk (martial artist, psychic, experimental android maid) and try to help her in some way, or a girl that the group already knows that has a problem of her own. The solution is found and everyone is made happy in the end. There are a few episodes that break this mold, but none of them are particularly memorable. However, the show is completely tame, with no violence or profanity, and is perfect for family viewing, if the family doesn't become bored viewing it.

Touched by an Angel - The Fourth Season, Vol. 1: A trio of angels Monica (Roma Downey), Tess (Della Reese), and Andrew (John Dye) are dispatched from heaven with a special mission: to inspire people facing sometimes unseen crossroads in their lives. Also on hand is Andrew, who, in addition to his duties as the Angel of Death, now helps out as a caseworker on carious assignments. Gloria, an angel for the 21st century, continues to seek guidance from Monica performing her angelic duties. While the angels may not bring solutions to every problem, they always deliver a message of hope.

When the get out, they decide to pull off "The Big Dirty" which is to steal a large amount of coins because they are untraceable and quit their life of crime forever.

Having learned the ways of women from his legendary mentor, Taj Badalandabad (Kal Penn) sets out to study abroad (or two) at England's prestigious Camford University. But he and his bottom-heavy bulldog, Balzac, are quickly rebuffed by the elitist members of Camford's top fraternity. So with the help of a few new friends?and a bold new attitude?Taj plans to teach the school snobs a lesson they'll never forget!

Whose Line Is It Anyway Season 1 & 2: Now on DVD by riotous demand, WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY?: THE COMPLETE SEASONS 1 & 2 features all 30 hilarious episodes from the show’s initial seasons. Host Clive Anderson directs the action--assigning points at random and enduring quips about his disappearing hairline--as players like Jonathon Pryce (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Steven Fry (Gosford Park) perform preposterous, slapstick antics in games of "Authors" and "Wrong Theme Tune." Laugh out loud as Josie Lawrence samples her vast array of silly singing styles and Greg Proops entertains a bevy of bizarre guests in "Party Quirks."

Wicked Little Things: After Dark Horror Fest: Recently widowed Karen Tunny and her two daughters, Sarah and Emma, move to a remote mountain home which Karen has inherited from the family of her late husband. However, she is unaware that the home is situated near an old mine, the site of an early 20th century tragedy in which many children where buried alive..

Woyzeck: Georg Buechner’s world-renowned play of oppression and dehumanization and has been magnificently captured in this stark update by Hungarian director Janos Szasz. Set in modern-day Budapest, the story follows the wretched Woyzeck as he ekes out a meager existence as a lowly worker in a railyard. In a striking performance by Lajos Kovacs (Wings of Desire), Woyzeck is an unkempt outcast who earns extra money by running errands for a bullying army captain and acting as a guinea pig for a local doctor. When his wife begins an affair with a policeman, Woyzeck experiences one humiliation too many and snaps. Using genuine black and white film stock, cinematographer Tibor Mathe exploits the rich blacks and graded grays for maximum atmosphere turning a dark, bleak tale into visual poetry.

Children of Men (HD DVD): Presenting a bleak, harrowing, and yet ultimately hopeful vision of humankind's not-too-distant future, Children of Men is a riveting cautionary tale of potential things to come.

Happy Feet (HD DVD): In the cold land of Antarctica, the Emperor Penguins each express their true love with a special heartsong of their own that expresses their very being.

Warriors of Heaven & Earth (Blu-ray): In the tradition of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero, Warriors of Heaven and Earth weaves a thread of battle, comradeship and honor. Set in the ferocious Gobi Desert, the story follows Lieutenant Li (Jiang Wen) and Japanese emissary Lai Xi (Nakai Kiichi), both first-class warriors and master swordsmen. After decades of service to the Chinese Emperor, Lai Xi longs to return to Japan, but is instead sent to the west to chase wanted criminals. His only passport back to Japan is to capture and execute Lieutenant Li, a renegade soldier wanted for leading a violent mutiny when he refused orders to kill female and child prisoners. Li and Lai Xi battle, but finally agree to delay their final personal fight until the caravan carrying a Buddhist monk is brought to safety. The monk, however, is carrying a sacred and powerful pagoda that attracts the attention of the region's ruthless overlord, Master An (Wang Xueqi). Lai Xi and Lt. Li, accompanied by Li's former posse of soldiers, who have forsaken their peaceful new lives to return to his side, must face the cruelty of the desert, the region's barbaric bandits and the brutality of the overlord's men before they can finally faceone another.

J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide joins ‘elite’ Tolkien publications - Xoanon @ 12:38 PST

MrCere writes: It is an exhilarating time to be a J.R.R. Tolkien enthusiast. Yes the good professor has long since gone to his rest and the crazy days of movie adaptations are behind, but for readers, these are heady times.

Grabbing headlines is “The Children Of Hurin,” a significant release of Tolkien’s own writings edited and presented by his son and literary heir Christopher Tolkien. But another significant work may have been missed by some in the excitement of new material and it is a piece of scholarship that needs to be considered.

Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull have shown again that the study of Tolkien and his works is far from a closed case as casual observers might assume. In their late 2006 two-volume work “The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide” they have delivered a significant pillar to the house of scholarship that rather than serves as the end to study, will act as a launching point for future researchers and interested readers.

Not to be confused with the authors’ 2005 “The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion” this work focuses on the author, not his most famous work. And while the story of the War of the Ring is part of the volume, it is written about in the context of the author’s life. For example, in the 32-page LOTR entry, a summary of the book’s plot is given in about four pages. These are followed by the writing history complete with quotes from letters about the work-in-progress that comes in with twice as many pages, all in an 1135 page book.

The book is filled with, as written in the preface, the stuff of his life and times, family, friends, colleagues and the places he knew and loved. It reflects too on ideas and themes that permeate his writings and records the results of the professor’s works on culture and society. It summarizes his complete works into easy, digestible summaries including poems and the different parts that make up “The Silmarillion” (for example). It is historical enough to mention that a town was settled at Tolkien’s beloved Oxford by 912 and then is treated in detail since he spent such a major portion of his life there. At the same time the research is contemporary enough to catalog Peter Jackson’s movies along with other adaptations and to address fan organizations on the internet in comparison to more traditional fandom.

Scull and Hammond have compiled a tome of Tolkien that is a splendid success. It becomes an instantly invaluable reference and a gateway to better understanding Tolkien and any of his works, especially in the context of his life. The extensive chronology, which is presented in its own volume, is equally impressive in its research and execution but for more casual readers this book will receive much less use than its partner. As useful as the book will be to a researcher or fan seeking some insight on a time or era or Tolkien’s busy life, for many the digest will create awe. The research process can hardly be imagined and it may well take time before it can be measured how much fruit this storehouse of knowledge yields for those who continue to study Tolkien.

So in the span of two years Scull and Hammond have contributed mightily to ‘must have’ publications regarding Tolkien. The research doubtlessly took many years more but the publication of “The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion” and the two volumes of “The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide: Chronology” and “The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide: Reader’s Guide” along with the forthcoming “The Children of Hurin” have made it as exciting as ever to have an interest in Middle-earth. Scull and Hammond’s three volumes (published by Houghton-Mifflin for North America) were clearly designed to sit together on a book shelf and are both durable and handsome. (This writer cannot comment on the UK’s edition).

They join a handful of books that while not “canonized Tolkien” are very close relatives. Any reader looking to push beyond “The Silmarillion” must include these books in the consideration while no scholar can be credible without an in-depth understanding of what has been done here.

The drawback to the new ‘Companion and Guide’ is that the alphabetical entries can be difficult to find. Surely the publisher and author considered topping pages with some sort of content guide for quick reference but the decision was made not to include them. The reader is left to look up and down individual pages to find the beginning of one entry and the start of another which can feel clumsy and almost frustrating when looking for a specific entry. The quality of the content makes the search worth the effort but it is a pity some device wasn’t included to help the reader.

Readers of TheOneRing.net will be pleased to know old TORn made it in the volume. In the “Fandom” entry under the sub-head “Tolkien Fandom and the internet” the book has the following: “Many of the Tolkien fan sites currently on the Internet were formed in response to the 2001-3 films, such as www.theonering.net . . .”

Many will also be drawn to the entry on “Adaptations” and its information on the Jackson films among many other incarnations of LOTR. The authors choose to give relatively little space to the movies that are embedded so deeply in popular culture, which, like it or not, spread “The Lord of the Rings” to greater across-the-board name recognition and popularity than ever before.

Scull and Hammond write, “Heavily promoted, Peter Jackson’s motion picture helped temporarily to increase sales of Tolkien’s works to extraordinary levels, though it is arguable whether it inspired many new readers to become enthusiasts of Tolkien’s book rather than devotees of the film.”

While it is hard to have a quibble when the phrase “though it is arguable” is used as a safeguard, personal experience with fans of books and film has presented me sufficient evidence (for myself) that indeed “many” have used the films as a gateway to the literary LOTR and from there to the extended Tolkien library. I even suspect that a number of eventual buyers of the ‘Companion and Guide’ were introduced to Middle-earth by way of Jackson’s films, but such minutiae are mentioned not as a criticism but only as a point of interest to this specific audience (readers of TORn).

Scull and Hammond have ultimately delivered an invaluable work for the Tolkien enthusiast that, like the source material and its author, will remain important and remarkable for many long years.
