Biography: Isildur first comes into the reckoning of Middle-earth's history as the son of Elendil who stole a scion from Nimloth the Fair in the courts of Númenor, fearing the Tree would be cut down. Isildur brought with him this scion during the destruction of Númenor and planted it before his house in Minas Ithil, one of the great towers built by him and his brother Anárion after they founded the kingdom of Gondor. It was under the banner of the White Three that he and his kin would soon fight when in SA 3441 the Men of Middle-earth, led by Isildur's father Elendil, bore arms along with the Elves of Gil-galad to form a Last Alliance to battle the evil force of Sauron.

In the ensuing battle, Elendil was slewn and Isildur bore up his father's broken sword Narsil to cut the One Ring from Sauron's finger, thus vanquishing him from Middle-earth. Isildur would not heed the advice of Elrond and Cirdan and instead of destroying the One Ring by casting it into Mount Doom, he took it as his own. In the end the Ring betrayed him, slipping from his finger as he attempted to swim away from a party of ambushing Orcs at the Gladden Fields near the Misty Mountains. Revealed to the Orcs, Isildur was fatally injured by a great many arrows and passed away from Middle-earth, along with all knowledge of the whereabouts of Sauron's ring.
